Como el 11 de hace 49 años, el día estaba nublado y frio. Salimos a un costado de la carretera 5 sur para ingresar al memorial de los 70 detenidos desaparecidos de Paine. En el lugar se respira tranquilidad y el memorial simula un bosque de árboles y, cada cierta cantidad de metros, hay 70 mosaicos que representan a las setenta víctimas campesinas de Paine, la comuna que, proporcionalmente a su población, tiene la mayor cantidad de detenidos desaparecidos y ejecutados políticos. Los mosaicos fueron hechos por los familiares de los ejecutados, cada uno tiene un nombre y simbolizan lo que ellos representaron en vida o el recuerdo que se tiene de ellos.
“El recinto es una metáfora a un gran bosque artificial, se erigen 1.000 pilares de madera impregnada, donde, al retirarse 70 pilares de madera, genera espacios de ausencia que recuerdan a cada uno de los 70 hombres desaparecidos. En el centro del conjunto, un espacio crea una especie de ágora central de 12 x 12 metros, permitiendo un espacio para el encuentro y las conmemoraciones”.
Sobre el escenario improvisado, que se arma en el centro del recinto, donde cohabita un árbol real, y así poder dar cabida al casi centenar de asistentes al acto homenaje en honor a las víctimas. En el centro hay un extenso lienzo con la imagen y el nombre de cada uno de los ejecutados. Son, en su inmensa mayoría, campesinos y jóvenes y transmiten vibras de los que les tocó vivir.
Una de las hijas de uno de los detenidos desaparecidos, en su alocución, señaló que: “mientras a ellos los recordemos en este memorial, ellos jamás morirán”. Por su parte, Juana Lazo, hija de Carlos Lazo Quinteros, detenido el 16 de octubre de 1973, indicó la importancia de poder rememorar a sus seres queridos: “Es primera vez que se presenta un ministro de Agricultura, ha sido bien cercano a nuestras familias y lo encontré sincero (…) él se comprometió con nosotros y eso es importante porque hemos luchado harto para que nos den el sitio de memoria para cada grupo familiar que se llevaron”.
Esteban Valenzuela, ministro de Agricultura en su discurso señaló que: “dieron sus vidas por la dignidad campesina (…) Vamos a pedir que haya respeto a los sitios de la memoria, los lugares donde fueron ejecutados y que se sepa la verdad. También insistimos en rescatar por qué ellos dieron su vida por la reforma agraria, dieron la lucha por la dignidad campesina y la organización». Además, anunció una investigación para conmemorar los 50 años que será coordinada por la Fundación de Comunicaciones, Capacitación y Cultura del Agro, Fucoa, y dirigida por el doctor en historia Edison Ortiz. Esta considera un libro, registro fotográfico y audiovisual, entre otros medios de difusión.
Entre los testimonios que se espera contar se considera a Jaques Chonchol, exministro y uno de los impulsores de la reforma agraria; Jaime Gazmuri, también actor relevante de ese proceso, así como organizaciones campesinas, familiares de las víctimas, testigos y sobrevivientes, entre otros.
En su visita al memorial, Esteban Valenzuela llevó 70 claveles rojos y fue acompañado por la Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos y Ejecutados de Paine, ADDyE, La Corporación Memorial Paine y representantes del ministerio de Agricultura. Luego, recorrió el recinto, visitó los mosaicos y sobre cada uno de ellos depositó un clavel rojo.
