Los digitales llegaron al gobierno de la mano de Michel Bachelet I. De pronto, el Estado comenzó a llenarse de “cabros chicos”, como apuntó un amigo, describiendo su visita a La Moneda, luego de la instalación de ese gobierno. El Estado, ese lugar en que por excelencia solo capeaban los analógicos, sufrió un shock.

Se ha vuelto un lugar común el señalar la distancia que existe entre la generación que hoy pugna por el poder en los más diversos ámbitos de la vida social, y la que se resiste a cederlo. Los primeros son los llamados digitales, mientras que los segundos somos más bien analógicos. La otra denominación que reciben estos grupos es la de nativos y migrantes digitales, y también millennials y boomers. Todos los casos aluden a la cercanía de una u otra generación con las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones, las TICs. En clave temporal, los digitales nacieron en la década del ochenta y crecieron con Internet. Los analógicos venimos de la explosión demográfica de los años cincuenta y sesenta, el babyboom (de allí el apelativo de boomers).
Unos y otros nos sabemos enfrentados en una guerra en la que no hay tregua ni acuerdo posible, y cuyo sino trágico es que la sabemos perdida. Es descorazonador presentir que nuestro océano de conocimiento acumulado durante eternidades, memorizando todo tipo de detalles, que muchas veces es de utilidad discutible, acabará en el olvido o “como una lágrima bajo la lluvia”, según Roy Batty, el replicante de Blade Runner (la del 82, claro). Mientras tanto, un digital se sentirá realizado por el simple hecho de descubrir una nueva App con la cual podrá facilitar su vida cotidiana.
La brecha generacional en política
Mientras los digitales ascendían la cuesta de la acumulación de fuerzas y aún no eran una verdadera amenaza, otras contradicciones marcaban la cotidianeidad de la sociedad. Las de clases, por descontado. Su emergencia social fue inusual y, por ese motivo, los analógicos no pudieron medir la magnitud exacta de la amenaza. Hasta su aparición, los adultos siempre habían bregado con la rebeldía juvenil, como los padres y madres con la adolescencia de sus vástagos. De hecho, los partidos políticos tenían (y tienen) sus divisiones juveniles que a veces eran parte de graves conflictos y terminaban rompiendo e independizándose. Pero ello ocurría en contados casos. Una vez materializada la separación, se creaba una división juvenil en el nuevo partido. Bajo ese modelo no había nada nuevo bajo el sol y “pintar el mono” era un derecho adquirido de la juventud, y los viejos sabios comprendían bien el alcance que podía tener. Después de todo, aquellos que quisieran hacer una carrera política no debían separarse demasiado del tronco partidario, en tanto era la puerta de entrada a ese mundo. Fueron muy escasos los ejemplos en contrario. La Falange, como antecedentes de la DC en la década del treinta del siglo pasado, que rompió con el Partido Conservador, y el MAPU y la Izquierda Cristiana en los años setenta, que, a su vez, rompieron con la DC, forman parte de las excepciones.
La norma era dejar que la crisis generacional transcurriera hasta que se difuminaba naturalmente. Es claro que hubo generaciones menos proclives a someterse y ellas acababan en rupturas como las señaladas. Pero, en general, los partidos usaban diestramente el garrote y la zanahoria para controlar a sus huestes. Bastaba cooptar algunos líderes con la promesa de una candidatura, y generaciones completas acababan desmovilizadas. Luego de eso, el garrote ordenaba las cosas por un buen tiempo. La casa siempre gana.
Sin embargo, con el advenimiento de los digitales, todo cambió. La paradojal manifestación de que estaban en carrera fue la desafección. Ya no pugnaban a codazos por un lugar en la política; al contrario, parecían darle la espalda. Los analógicos, preparados para responder al desafío con las herramientas de siempre, se encontraron con que no había nadie a quien amenazar con el ostracismo político ni tratar de comprar con alguna carrera. Los digitales no se inscribieron en los registros electorales y estiraron el chicle hasta hacer caer la participación electoral por debajo del 50%.
Con la cabeza a dos manos, los analógicos construyeron una explicación satisfactoria que los dejaba libres de culpa, claro. Lo que ocurría es que los digitales “no estaban ni ahí”. Hecha esa constatación, la tarea era “reencantar”, y emocionaban hasta las lágrimas esos alegatos de conspicuos próceres, respecto a la nobleza de la función pública y cómo la política era la mejor expresión de ello, convencidos que estaban frente a una generación por completo ajena a la participación. Pero eso era otro error.
Cosas de digitales
Es necesario aclarar que los digitales tienen una cabeza progresista. Ciertamente, hay jóvenes reaccionarios, y muchos. También los hay, definitivamente, fachos. Sin embargo, independiente de su número, no poseen un espíritu y una identidad colectiva capaz de dialogar con su época. A finales de los sesenta se podía ser como Jaime Guzmán, pero es claro que había que ser revolucionario.
Como sea, se ha abundado en lo raros que resultan para nosotros los digitales. Nacieron en la última parte del siglo pasado y hoy, ya cuarentones, evidencian la distancia que mantienen con los analógicos de clase media, que nacieron apegados a los rasgos identitarios de su grupo social, entre ellos la acumulación de educación y, en el mejor de los casos, algunos bienes durables. No es que los digitales no persigan la educación, pero no le prenden velitas ni la entienden más que como un medio. Crecieron viendo que esa acumulación ya no aseguraba una vida cómoda. Por eso no consideran muy interesante recordar quién les enseñó a leer.
Los analógicos acumularon bienes que, a la escala que fuera, tenían el declarado propósito de proveer una base de bienestar a sus vástagos que, paradojalmente, resultaron ser digitales con escaso apego por la acumulación. No es que valoren una frugalidad franciscana ni el templado carácter de un espartano hijo del rigor; por el contrario, son más bien proclives a una comodidad que llega al punto de ser reacios a la tan anhelada independencia, por los inconvenientes asociados y por la que los analógicos luchamos hasta conseguir abandonar el hogar familiar.
Nada tengo en contra de los digitales, pero no es menor el desprecio que han manifestado por los valores más tradicionales de la sociedad desarrollista: la casa propia. En una ocasión me encontré con el hijo de una amiga, que justamente pocas semanas antes me había comentado, rebosante de orgullo, la buena inserción laboral que había alcanzado su hijo, titulado hacía algún tiempo. Entre los más diversos avatares, me terminó confesando que prácticamente lo había tenido que obligar a que ahorrara para, luego, comprarse un departamento.
Los digitales y el trabajo
Podríamos pensar que la vileza característica de los capitalistas y sus esbirros podía estar detrás de esta predisposición negativa, pero, lejos de ello, también se encontraba algo similar en la dirigencia sindical de la época. Fui testigo en variadas ocasiones de la frustración de antiguos líderes de los trabajadores al verse incapaces de transmitir a los trabajadores más jóvenes la importancia de la organización.
Muchos años atrás, a propósito de una investigación de la OIT que realizaba acerca de los factores explicativos de las brechas de desocupación entre adultos y jóvenes (que era la denominación de la dupla en aquella época), una gerente de RR.HH. de una importante empresa transnacional me señalaba que la política de su empresa era que, en igualdad de competencias, tenían cierta preferencia por los adultos a la hora de contratar. Reconocía que el hándicap de los adultos era una mayor propensión a las acciones colectivas (léase pertenencia o simpatía por los sindicatos) y una cierta cultura de derechos, por escasos que fueran, y cierta prestancia para defenderlos. La contrapartida que les favorecía era que sobre sus espaldas cargaban, generalmente, con responsabilidades familiares que los hacía más dóciles. Alternativamente, en su visión los jóvenes no tenían esos “vicios” e incluso eran más bien refractarios a todo aquello que limitara su individualidad. Sin embargo, su hándicap estaba en una suerte de “arresponsabilidad”. No es que se tratara de rebeldes dispuestos a luchar contra las normas imperantes como expresión de un sistema de dominación, o unos crápulas que cultivan una vida licenciosa y ajena a cualquier deber. Simplemente, no podían entender la importancia de las normas en ningún concepto y tampoco en el ambiente laboral.
Mi entrevistada ejemplificaba esta condición con el problema de la asistencia al trabajo, y el papel de la hora de entrada. Si el ingreso se establecía a las 08:00 AM, los jóvenes no lograban entender la importancia de no llegar quince o veinte minutos más tarde, más aún cuando ofrecían recuperar ese tiempo perdido al finalizar la jornada. Es claro, y todos sabían que no se trataba de una pérdida de producción o incluso de productividad para la empresa, como resultado de un atraso o incluso varios. Se trataba de la capacidad de adherir a la norma más simple de todas, y sin la cual es difícil conseguir el acatamiento de instrucciones más lesivas.
Percibía en su relato una cierta perplejidad ante este comportamiento, más aún cuando acotaba, además, la presencia de una cierta tendencia a abandonar el empleo ante cualquier contratiempo o frente al simple aburrimiento. En suma, a su entender contaban con características singulares que llevaban a muchas empresas a evitarlos o a tenerlos como permanentes candidatos a salir primero si las cosas no iban según lo esperado.
El mundo es de los digitales

El Estado, ese lugar en que por excelencia solo capeaban los analógicos, sufrió un shock. Además, la burocracia empezaba a hacerse paritaria y, no solo eso: se rejuvenecía de manera muy perceptible.
Una razón es que los dejaron entrar; otra es que era el resultado de una acumulación de capital humano avanzado que, aunque modesta todavía, marcó un punto de inflexión con las políticas públicas destinadas a ese fin.
Los estudios de posgrado fueron desde siempre un raro privilegio de los sectores más acomodados, y luego la fortuna de unos pocos pertenecientes a capas medias que accedieron a becas de organismos privados. Recién en la década de los años ochenta, del siglo pasado, aparecieron las ayudas públicas con ese fin.[1] En esos años obtuvieron beca para estudios de posgrado un promedio anual de 3 personas; en la primera década de la democracia, ese promedio se elevó a 28; la primera década de este siglo fue de 141; y en la última década alcanzó las 690.[2] No se necesita un gran análisis para ver la amplia fuente de talento que estuvo a disposición del Estado.
Los digitales aterrizaron en el planeta, con un sistema político ya en crisis. Es claro que de eso no podemos culparlos. El problema es que no nos entendemos mucho. El sistema político ha experimentado innumerables crisis, pero cuando ello ocurría en el pasado reciente, llegaban otros analógicos y lo arreglaban a su real gana, provocando la furia de los responsables del caos anterior. Pero hablaban de lo mismo, entre los mismos y de la misma forma. Es eso que llaman “cultura”. Es lo que no estamos compartiendo.
Hace unos días, me llamó un amigo indignado por las palabras del ministro Jackson. En rigor, no creo que esté equivocado. En ese campo, también guardamos una distancia con los digitales y no creo que nos favorezca.
Los analógicos tenemos todavía cuerda, pero no para rato; vivimos preocupados de los árboles de las proximidades, sin atender a que existe un bosque; tenemos la pretensión de una comprensión amplia, pero en realidad solo sufrimos la angustia de percibir todo lo que no sabemos. Los digitales viven más felices; lo que saben, lo saben suficientemente bien, y lo que no, no es muy de su interés; total, para eso el mundo ahora es suyo.
