Su designación en 2010, cuando concluía el Mundial de Sudáfrica, sorprendió a medio mundo, pues, aparte de los petrodólares, Catar no tiene ni historia ni proyección ni cultura futbolística. Está claro que el país árabe pagó suculentas cifras de soborno para que la nominación recayera en ellos. Una investigación del diario inglés Sunday Times aseguró que los gobernantes árabes pagaron más de U$ 5 millones en soborno para asegurarse el apoyo a su candidatura; en tanto, según el mismo medio, la FIFA, por esa nominación, recibió más de U$ 880 millones. No solo eso, sino que otra investigación del mismo periódico estableció que dicho país promovió, además, una campaña de propaganda negra para desacreditar a sus otros dos oponentes: Estados Unidos y Australia, para dejarlos fuera de carrera, lo que ha llevado a que el departamento de Justicia norteamericano, así como la fiscalía francesa hayan investigado la denuncia.
Al igual que otras monarquías autoritarias del Golfo Pérsico, Catar ha hecho uso intensivo de mano de obra en especial migrante. Según el medio inglés The Guardian serían cerca de 6500 los trabajadores muertos desde 2010, en esa nación, desde que fue designada como sede para este mundial.
Cambio de mes para su realización: diciembre, pleno invierno en Europa; de horarios para su desarrollo han profundizado las críticas de jugadores al punto que, hasta uno de los principales responsables de su nombramiento como sede el expresidente de la FIFA, Joseph Blatter, indicó hace poco que fue “un error” el llevarse el mundial a la nación oriental.

No estoy en contra de que se celebre en lugares donde el fútbol se promocione, como ocurrió en Sudáfrica y en Estados Unidos, pero Catar no es un país de fútbol”. Finalmente, espetó: “Han muerto miles de personas construyendo los estadios. Y aun así vamos a celebrar la Copa del Mundo allí. Es horrible”.
Toni Kroos, a su vez, figura del Real Madrid en 2021, levantó la voz e indicó que quienes laboran en la construcción de estadios “trabajan a 50° y con alimentación insuficiente”. Hay denuncias de organizaciones de derechos humanos, como Amnistía Internacional, y por la red circulan diferentes peticiones denunciando los más de 6.500 trabajadores muertos, que laboraban de sol a sol por un dólar la hora, y que no han recibido ninguna indemnización de la FIFA que, según se acusa, “se embolsarán millones de dólares de ganancias”. Diversos artistas, como Rod Stewart, Shakira y Dua Lipa han señalado que no participarían de la inauguración del Mundial. Para esta última no era negociable, “sino una cuestión de principios”.

Se modificó el mes tradicional de su desarrollo, junio, para noviembre-diciembre y así hacer soportable un clima que no está hecho para el desarrollo natural de este masivo deporte y no afectar en exceso el físico de futbolistas; se han modificado horarios de los partidos para la madrugada de países tradicionales del balompié; se han construido estadios que se desarmaran apenas termine el Mundial y su desarrollo, salvo satisfacer a una poderosa oligarquía financiera local y la avidez, nunca satisfecha, por el dinero de la señora FIFA. Seguramente, no dejará ninguna huella profunda en ese extraño país donde hay un trato denigrante y discriminatorio hacia las mujeres.
El Mundial es para países que aprovechan su ejecución, sus visitas. para crecer también como sociedad. Le ocurrió a Chile en 1962, y el Mundial de Fútbol, más allá de su evaluación y comparación, dejó una huella imborrable en nuestro país y nos colocó, por primera vez en nuestra historia, en la globalización. En Catar no; se inventan hinchas falsos, se imponen reglas anacrónicas para fanáticos extranjeros y periodistas, muchos de los cuales, han hecho de los mundiales un verdadero tour para conocer el mundo moderno. Un deporte, por lo demás, que por historia ha sido de barriada, de carácter popular y masivo y Catar hoy lo ha alejado de ese público que lo goza y lo disfruta, transformándolo, por la ambición del dinero, en un espectáculo para elites que, además, no lo entienden, lo desprecian y lo usan solo para lavar imagen, y que luego olvidarán.
