La actual guerra de Ucrania no es precisamente una guerra civil, puesto que Ucrania y Rusia coexisten como países independientes hace treinta años, pero el pasado soviético que comparten, y su herencia cultural común le da al conflicto un aspecto fratricida. Una pieza clave de esta herencia común es el trauma colectivo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La Unión Soviética fue protagonista de aquel conflicto, y su sufrimiento durante los años 1941-1945 fue inmenso. Gran parte de su territorio fue invadido por el ejército alemán, casi todos los hombres en edad de servicio fueron movilizados (y también lo fueron muchas mujeres, cosa inédita entre las otras potencias combatientes), y millones murieron en por bombardeos, fusilamientos, trabajos forzados, y hambrunas. Se calcula que más de veinte millones de ciudadanos soviéticos murieron en el conflicto, más que todos los demás países en la guerra combinados (y más que la población total de Chile), representando más de un diez por ciento de la población total de la URSS. Después de una serie de derrotas catastróficas en los años 1941 y 1942, el Ejército Rojo se reorganizó bajo el mando del general Georgy Zhukov, ganó la victoria más importante de la guerra en la batalla de Stalingrado (noviembre 1942 a febrero 1943), y expulsó a los invasores de su tierra. Dos años después, llevaron la bandera roja a las puertas de Berlín y dominaron un territorio más extenso que el imperio de los zares. Antes de ser enemigo de Hitler, Stalin firmó en 1939 un tratado de no agresión con el dictador alemán, que le permitió la anexión de un gran territorio que antes formaba parte de Polonia (que incluye la ciudad ucraniana de Lviv), que en seguida fue sometido al terror revolucionario. Los ucranianos nunca perdonaron estos hechos a Rusia. Cuando llegaron los alemanes, algunos ucranianos los recibieron como libertadores, y hasta se incorporaron como voluntarios en fuerzas auxiliares al ejército enemigo. Esta posición, que siempre fue minoritaria, fue de corta duración, y cuando se dieron cuenta de la brutalidad nazi, casi todos los ucranianos dieron su apoyo al ejército soviético, considerándolo como el mal menor.
