El guión es la puerta de entrada (y salida) de las letras a la imagen y el sonido. El guión es la puerta caprichosa que al pasarla, le da al director la posibilidad de restringirse, por un lado, a un nuevo texto como si fuera una camisa de fuerza o felizmente para moverse a sus anchas. Me referiré a algunas películas que tienen un trasfondo literario o a aquellas que, guión en mano, respetan comas y comillas del mismo.
Los hermanos Coen tomaron de Homero (S. VIII a.d. c.) para hacer ¿Oh, hermano dónde estás? (2.000). Una comedia muy recomendable de ver. A pesar que los personajes tienen un recorrido como Odiseo, cuesta ver la similitud con La Odisea, pero también hay que reconocer que aparecen personajes míticos, oráculos, cíclopes y sirenas que cantan y atrapan, etc.
Como decíamos, de la literatura al cine hay un formato de diferencia, grandes obras literarias para pasar al celuloide no sólo deben lidiar con los aspectos técnicos, sino que con otros aspectos bastantes más complejos, como sucedió con El Padrino (Mario Puzo, 1969), que tenía a su haber solo fracasos económicos. La novela fue escrita por encargo, se escribió con poca fe y, sorprendentemente para el autor se convirtió en su obra más conocida. Cuando pasó al cine, se repite la desidia y poca fe de todos, incluyendo al propio director Francis F. Coppola. Sumado a ello, la mafia, que si bien aceptaba el retrato, quería salir bien puesta en la foto y cada uno con una aureola en su cabeza. Todo indicaba el gran fracaso y todos sabemos que no fue así. La diferencia entre el libro y la película es, a mi modo de ver, que el film tiende más a la intriga y a lo que ya se conocía de la mafia con todos sus tentáculos. El libro, en cambio, es más ideológico, en donde están presentes el honor, la familia, la religión y la tradición. Todo arrastrado desde Sicilia, Italia.
La Insoportable levedad del ser (1984) dejó bastante satisfecho a su autor Milan Kundera, cuando, en 1987, vio la película homónima, dirigida por Philip Kaufman. En esta producción uno confirma que la novela siempre es más amplia que la película, independiente de la mala o la buena versión.
Donde hay más equilibrio entre novela y película (ambas de 1986), es en El nombre de la rosa de Humberto Eco. Novela compleja, pues, según el autor, estaba escrita para tres niveles de lectores y con todas sus complejidades llegó al cine de la mano de Jean-Jacques Annaud y llegó muy bien de esa mano, ya que obtuvo un amplio reconocimiento de la crítica. Algo cercano para nosotros es que actúa la chilena Valentina Vargas.
Hace poco nos hemos enterado del fin de la tremenda carrera de Bruce Willis (quién se merece más que una columna). De él se dijo que también había hecho películas de segunda categoría, producciones conocidas como clase B (bajos costos y bajas ambiciones estéticas). Esta cinta está basada en la novela Desayuno para campeones (Kurt Vonnegut, 1973) que se llevó al cine en 1999 de la mano de Alan Rudolph, con Willis como protagonista. Apuesto a la gran sensibilidad del actor para aceptar el estrambótico rol en esta producción.
Sí hablamos de Desayuno para campeones, la referencia inmediata es Miedo y Asco en la Vegas (Hunter S. Thompson, 1971). Al respecto, cuando preguntan o explican de qué se trata una obra, pienso que ya partimos mal. Las obras son para gozarlas y emocionarse. El tipo de gozo y emoción ya es de cada uno. Luego, nos damos cuenta que mientras más sensaciones provoca una obra, la trama se debilita o solo es la excusa para explayarse, así el paso de la novela al cine es más fluido. Eso es lo que sucede con este Miedo y Asco en las Vegas. Novela y película corren a la misma velocidad, con actuaciones soberbias de Johnny Depp y Benicio del Toro, con la mano de Terry Gilliam, que ya tiene prontuario de paranoia dirigiendo Brazil, la Película (1985) y Doce monos (1995).
