La violencia nunca es la solución

Esta semana nos hemos enfrentado a titulares dominados por la violencia en diferentes contextos. No solo en Chile, sino en el mundo entero. Desde lo frívolo hasta lo más horrendo. Partamos por la frivolidad, nada más cabe en esa definición que Hollywood. En la pasada edición de los premios Oscar ocurrió el evento más bochornoso que haya tenido dicha premiación. Un agitado Will Smith abofeteó al comediante Chris Rock por hacer un chiste a costas de la condición médica de su mujer. Sin duda, una broma de malísimo gusto que poca cabida tiene en los tiempos de lo políticamente correcto. Sin embargo, salieron muchos en la defensa de Smith con argumentos que van desde: tiene derecho a defender a su familia, Rock cruzó una línea roja, etc. Me parece que muy pocos defienden al humorista por su chiste que no hizo reír a casi nadie. El punto central es que la violencia no se defiende nunca, en ningún caso, punto y aparte. Ese debiese haber sido el único criterio válido, pero en la era de la relativización no lo fue. Al final, tenemos gente a favor y en contra y la certeza absoluta que nunca se filmará un Madagascar 4. Marty y Gloria nunca más serán protagonistas de una película animada, al menos no con las voces de Chris Rock y Jada Pinkett Smith.

Vamos a lo que no es frívolo y que toca nuestra realidad local. Las protestas son un derecho que tenemos todos como ciudadanos. Sin embargo, eso no nos da el derecho a la violencia ni a la destrucción de la propiedad pública o privada. No obstante, hace años que vemos cómo quemar buses del Transantiago, destruir pymes y monumentos se ha convertido en un deporte. Las excusas nunca faltan: desde un triunfo o derrota deportiva hasta diversas causas. La entrada de los encapuchados a la escena de protestas lleva mucho tiempo, y ni leyes han podido contra este fenómeno. Tampoco contra las barricadas. Eso ha significado millones de dólares en pérdidas materiales y, ocasionalmente, de vidas humanas. Esta semana, como todos los años, se conmemoró el Día del Joven Combatiente que hace años se convirtió en el Día del Joven Delincuente. Sin embargo, nunca habíamos visto una escena de jóvenes destruyendo un departamento. ¿Qué explicación puede haber para que una turba entre a un edificio, saque al dueño de un departamento y comience a tirar los muebles por la ventana? Ninguna racional, con certeza.

El problema principal es que llevamos tiempo tolerando niveles de violencia que son inaceptables e injustificados. Hace 40 años los jóvenes combatientes arriesgaban el pellejo por el retorno a la democracia. La violencia tampoco era justificable, pero al menos se entendía en el contexto. Hay que recordar que los atentados poco hicieron para derrumbar a la dictadura de Pinochet; fue la acción de sectores políticos la que logró que se llevara a cabo un exitoso plebiscito que nos sacó de la pesadilla.

Hoy en día, los argumentos de que se lucha contra el neoliberalismo no tienen la misma lógica. De partida, no hay dictadura ni censura. Cualquiera puede manifestarse, ya sea en las calles como en las urnas. Pero eso requiere trabajo y esfuerzo. No vale salir a protestar si no se va a votar, pero esa es la realidad de muchos jóvenes que no tienen ningún recuerdo de la dictadura, a no ser por lo que les dicen sus padres y abuelos. No existe justificación alguna para la escena de jóvenes arrojando muebles por una ventana. Eso se explica en medio de un contexto de delincuencia y enajenación, pero también de la rabia y la frustración.

Hay una razón clara por la cual El baile de los que sobran de Los Prisioneros fue coreada durante el 18-O, y continúa siendo un himno para muchos jóvenes. Muchos de ellos no ven un futuro por delante, han quedado atrás en un sistema que los ve como desechos, daño colateral. El problema es complejo porque, junto a la falta de oportunidades, está la droga que es un lastre que solo ha aumentado en el contexto chileno, el país que más consume en toda América Latina. Eso también podría explicar la violencia de los casos de bullying que estamos viendo en los colegios y que también ha sido razón de protestas. La violencia de esos actos de maltrato y asedio no son normales ni justificables de ningún modo.

Llama la atención el crimen de un excarabinero, a quien le robaron la camioneta y, al parecer, quemaron su cuerpo en Cañete. Un crimen horroroso cometido por un par de menores de edad. Los jóvenes y la violencia están apareciendo en los titulares con demasiada frecuencia. 

Nadie duda que en Chile tenemos mucha rabia acumulada que hemos traspasado a nuestra juventud, que hoy solo expresa esa ira de los modos más insospechados: como tirar muebles de un edificio, quemar un cuerpo o sacarle las cejas a un adolescente como forma de tortura. Tenemos que hacer algo urgente para remediar este problema. El énfasis en la salud mental que mencionó el presidente Boric en su discurso desde el balcón de La Moneda es parte de la solución, pero no es todo.

Los sectores de izquierda tienen que sacarse el complejo frente a la delincuencia, no se puede justificar más la violencia con peros de ningún tipo. No podemos volver a tener a una diputada Cariola justificando los disparos en Temucuicui en medio de la visita de la ministra Siches, de su propio sector. No se puede siempre estar del lado de los manifestantes cuando luego salen a la luz videos de gente pateando a un carabinero. Lo más urgente es reformar o derechamente disolver a la fuerza policial y comenzar de nuevo. No podemos tener a policías que no respeta nadie, que son vistos como el enemigo. Tampoco podemos tener inteligencia dentro de las policías urdiendo estupideces como la Operación Huracán o el fallido montaje contra Daniel Alcaíno.

No quiero terminar esta editorial sin mencionar el mayor acto de violencia que tenemos hoy en día: la guerra en Ucrania. Si bien hay quienes en Chile aún se creen la propaganda rusa y, aún peor, piensan que Rusia sigue siendo comunista, la realidad es que la invasión sigue su curso y Rusia sigue cometiendo crímenes de guerra. La misma comisionada de derechos humanos de la ONU, nuestra expresidenta Bachelet, lo ha declarado en base a las evidencias que se manejan. Una cosa es una guerra y otra es el ataque a civiles que intentan huir. Hay muchas mujeres y niños atrapados que no pueden salir porque cada vez que se ha acordado un corredor humanitario, Rusia rompe el compromiso y comienza a disparar contra civiles. Los horrores se multiplican, desde niños secuestrados hasta mujeres violadas en manada frente a sus hijos. Esto no debiera ocurrir nunca; no existe justificación de ningún tipo.

En cada caso, la violencia no se justifica. El que lo hace pasa a ser cómplice. Es importante que entendamos eso como sociedad: en el minuto que le buscamos la explicación que valide un acto violento, pasamos a validarlo. Ese es un lastre del cual los sectores de izquierda deben desprenderse de modo urgente. Está claro que hay algunos que nunca han creído en la democracia, pero quienes sí, deben sacarse de encima las cadenas de la justificación de la violencia.
