Con este provocador título, Edison narra los entretelones de la organización del Mundial del 62 y las circunstancias que llevaron a la FIFA a elegir a Chile como sede, pese a las carencias económicas del país y el reciente terremoto de 1960 en Valdivia. A partir del libro de Daniel Matamala sobre el Mundial del 62, Edison nos pasea por el contexto histórico y las circunstancias en que se escogió a un país tercermundista en sede del campeonato futbolístico más importante del mundo.

“También digo que el de 1962 fue el peor Mundial de la historia. No es una simple frase. Traté de buscar parámetros objetivos que permitieran comparar las Copas del Mundo: datos numéricos para los que existe esa información, desde 1930 hasta la fecha, como asistencias promedio o número de estadios (en lo organizativo), y goles marcados o expulsiones (en lo deportivo). Esa tabla (de números, no de percepciones subjetivas) es la que arroja ese resultado”. La frase es para quedar perplejo. Es de Daniel Matamala.
Sus argumentos impresionan y no dejan de ser sólidos. Luego de leer el texto, uno queda como si le hubiesen pegado un puntapié entremedio de las piernas. Allí donde tanto duele. Una vez pasado el shock inicial, resulta aún muy difícil estar de acuerdo con el hombre de medios, porque hablar contra parte de nuestros mitos, y el Mundial es eso, resulta como pegarse un tiro en los zapatos. Es lo que les ha ocurrido a los escasos atrevidos que han tenido la valentía de emprender tan quijotesca acción.
Sin embargo, luego de revisar el vídeo oficial de la FIFA sobre el evento, el asunto se empieza a esclarecer. En efecto, una primera conclusión sobre las imágenes nos lleva a reafirmar lo planteado por el polémico narrador, imágenes que -miradas bajo este paraguas- se comienzan a reinterpretar. Cuando uno revisa las famosas filmaciones de los alemanes, que se exhibían con algunos días de retraso en esa nación sobre el Mundial que se desarrollaba en Chile, que luego se transformaron en material oficial de la FIFA, van dejando la misma impresión que el libro de Daniel Matamala: el de un país muy pobre, una nación casi pintoresca, donde la capital está llena de desorden vial, en que las marchas militares andan a la orden del día. Al punto que un locutor tenga que decir: “esto es Santiago; no Berlín antes de la guerra”, para explicar a otros televidentes o cinéfilos lo que ocurría en el país del Mundial de 1962. Las imágenes de los estadios, como el William Braden semivacío y las fotografías de urbes atrasadas, con un Estadio Nacional rodeado de terrenos agrícolas, donde la urbanización y la ciudad aún no llegan, un Mundial de mucha agresión, violencia y poco fútbol, parecen confirmar la conclusión del periodista. Pero ¿fue en realidad tan así?
Contexto Histórico
Primero, correspondía organizarla en América, ya que luego del reclamo de las federaciones por haber sido organizado dos veces consecutivas en Europa: 1954 en Suiza y 1958 en Suecia, se decidió que correspondía hacerlo en el nuevo continente. ¿Por qué Chile? Bueno, aquí se cruzan los mitos –aunque siempre esconden algo de verdad – y la historia. El primero, señala que fue la labor encomiable y misionera de Carlos Dittborn y Juan Pinto Durán, quienes habrían recorrido diversos países argumentando en favor de Chile.
Finalmente, se inscribieron tres candidaturas: la nuestra, la de Argentina y la de Alemania Federal, que desistió. Se dice, además que, por diversas razones, la FIFA no quería como sede a Argentina y que esto se mostró en la votación final, realizada el 11 de junio de 1956 en Lisboa: 32 votos para Chile, 11 para Argentina y 13 abstenciones, marcaron la preferencia por nuestro país. Nadie, con la excepción de Matamala, ha explorado que en Argentina estalló, pocas horas antes de la votación, un golpe militar que dejó a ese país en la incertidumbre hasta después de la elección. No había televisión, ni teléfonos móviles, ni Facebook, ni Twitter, ni Instagram. También, se ha olvidado el apoyo en bloque del mundo socialista a Chile como sede. Entre bambalinas, se señala que entre Perón y la URSS estuvo la respuesta a la victoria chilena.
Si bien, hasta muy entrado 1959 no hubo adelantos significativos en la preparación y organización del certamen mundial, lo que gatilló incluso un reclamo formal, “grave preocupación” de la Asociación Internacional de Prensa por la falta de comodidades mínimas para la labor de los medios. La queja la repitió más tarde el Congreso Mundial de Periodistas y, un poco antes del Mundial, el propio secretario general de la FIFA, Helmut Kässer, al señalar que: “nada había de positivo en Chile”.
El terremoto de 1960 en Valdivia y sus efectos en todo el sur del país fue empleado, con o sin razón, como pretexto para modificar las sedes que exigía la FIFA: las subsedes debían ser entre seis y diez, incluyendo la ampliación del Estadio Sausalito a 45.000 espectadores, y la construcción de un nuevo recinto en Concepción, para 40.000 personas. Como sabemos, las subsedes terminaron siendo solo cuatro y ningún estadio, con excepción del Nacional, superaba los 25.000 asientos. Se cambiaron sedes originales y, en su reemplazo, se incorporaron Arica (por la posibilidad de que Perú jugará allí, lo que no ocurrió porque fue eliminado en la fase previa), Viña del Mar y Rancagua, lo que reafirmó, en algunos extranjeros, la convicción de que Chile no había sido la mejor opción: “Chile designó cuatro subsedes, algunas de ellas francamente absurdas, como la ciudad fronteriza de Arica, en el desierto de Atacama, y Rancagua, una pequeña ciudad muy cercana a Santiago” (Eduardo Arias, el Libro del Mundial).
De este modo, con Arica, Viña, Rancagua y Santiago como centro, se dio marcha a un Mundial, cuyo sorteo se efectuó en el ex Hotel Carrera – hoy Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores – en enero de ese año, dejando a Chile en un grupo muy competitivo, el II, junto a Alemania –ex campeón 1954, – Italia –1934 y 1938– y una débil Suiza. En Rancagua, en tanto, quedó el grupo IV con Argentina, Bulgaria, Hungría e Inglaterra. El grupo I, en Arica con Uruguay, Colombia, la ex URSS y la extinta Yugoeslavia; el grupo III con Brasil, México, España y la ex Checoeslovaquia.
Un poco antes, un terremoto, el de Valdivia 1960, el de mayor magnitud mundial desde que existen mediciones confiables, estuvo a punto de terminar con la ilusión del mundial en Chile. Los ingleses, que ahora controlaban la FIFA por medio de Stanley Rous, vieron en esa tragedia la posibilidad de trasladar el certamen a Londres. Razones había de sobra: los efectos del propio desastre, la suspensión de los recursos del gobierno a la obra y, por supuesto, el atraso en las mismas. Solo una reunión en Roma, al alero de los Juegos Olímpicos en agosto de 1960, hace volver la tranquilidad a la dirigencia nacional, en especial a Dittborn. ¿Por qué siempre todo tiene que costarnos tanto? Se preguntaban los chilenos.
Si nos atenemos a una de las publicaciones oficiales del evento – ¿Quién es quién? – la nación se presenta como una particularidad y una originalidad sin parangón en América. Así en la descripción de su raza se señala que es “Blanca, de ascendencia europea; sin población de color ni mezclas; la población más homogénea de las Américas”. A continuación el texto oficial del evento señala una serie de originalidades – la ciudad más austral del mundo, el país con la costa más extensa del mundo, único país con la cabeza en el trópico y sus pies en el Polo Sur, único país de América con fronteras naturales, único país del mundo con la ley de enseñanza primaria obligatoria y gratuita, primer país del mundo en productor de salitre natural, primer país minero de América, primer país que inició la construcción de un ferrocarril en América, etc., etc., etc. Por último, la exageración más grande: “país que, en 150 años de vida independiente, sólo ha tenido dos alteraciones revolucionarias de reducida trascendencia”. Seguramente el citado texto se refería a las revueltas de 1891 y la de 1932, pero olvidaba la propia abdicación de O’Higgins, el asesinato de Portales, las convulsiones de 1851, 1861, 1910, 1920, la dictadura de Ibáñez, y la violencia política reciente de la década del 50’. Estaba claro que se pretendía emular el orden europeo siempre admirado por nuestra élite, aunque la propia reseña pasaba por alto que Europa venía recién saliendo de lo peor y que aún no terminaba de reponerse del drama del holocausto. El mito de la nación estaba detrás del mundial y, seguramente, iría también colaborando y contribuyendo a la creación de este otro.
Es por esta imitación-aproximación al mundo desarrollado con la que nos queríamos comparar que dolía tanto en la prensa local que, de cuando en vez, los propios europeos acreditados en Santiago nos recordarán, a veces con propósitos egoístas, lo que realmente éramos: “En vano los chilenos, como para consolar a los italianos, dicen que Santiago se parece a Turín […] Y ello tal vez para tratar de hacer olvidar la realidad de ésta capital, que es el símbolo triste de uno de los países subdesarrollados del mundo y afligido por todos los males posibles: desnutrición, prostitución, analfabetismo, alcoholismo, miseria… Bajo éstos aspectos Chile es terrible y Santiago su más doliente expresión, tan doliente que pierde en ello sus características de ciudad anónima”. El Aeropuerto, Cerrillos, es pequeño – un diario alemán reclamará “muy malas las comunicaciones, una sola cancha de aterrizaje”-, también ubicado en el hinterland de la ciudad y dónde la gente se agolpa a esperar a las selecciones que vienen, especialmente, desde el viejo continente.

Las imágenes enfatizan que el estadio estuvo hasta el final en preparativos para estar a punto y solo pudo ser inaugurado seis días antes de la gesta, aunque hasta horas antes del inicio del primer partido, Chile versus Suiza, el 30 de mayo, se estuvo trabajando en sus terminaciones. Ese día se perdió la pelota oficial con la que debía inaugurarse el mundial y hubo que hacer milagros para reponerla. El discurso de una carilla con que el presidente Jorge Alessandri inauguró el mundial evidencia muy bien el entusiasmo que la gesta deportiva despertaba en el presidente. ¿Entonces fuimos el mundial más malo de la historia? En las próximas ediciones de El Regionalista lo iremos dilucidando tal como si estuviese desarrollándose el torneo tal cual ocurrió hace sesenta años.
