Como parte de la conmemoración del Día de la Bandera de Haití, El regionalista conversó con el artista audiovisual haitiano, Jean-René Rinvil. Según este artista, el gran valor cultural de Haití es su arte y la noción de libertad que le entregó al mundo tras la independencia del primer país latinoamericano.

Jean-René Rinvil es un artista audiovisual (pintor y cineasta) y profesor de Konpa que nació en Haití y emigró a los Estados Unidos a los 12 años, en medio del caos tras la caída de “Baby Doc” Duvalier. La madre de Jean-René trabajó en Caracas por diez años, mientras sus abuelos lo criaron en Haití. Luego, su madre emigró a los EE.UU. y se llevó a sus hijos a vivir a Miami. Allí, Jean-René fue a un programa especial de cine en la Universidad de Miami cuando era alumno de secundaria en el South Miami High School..
Jean-René estudió su licenciatura en la University of South Florida y luego hizo un magíster de bellas artes (MFA) en el prestigioso Art Institute of Chicago. Para su tesis escogió hacer un documental en Haití, pero su profesor guía solo le puso dificultades y le dio una nota negativa. Eso cambió cuando el documental comenzó a tener éxito y ganar premios. Desde entonces, Jean-René ha trabajado en el ámbito audiovisual y en la pintura digital (mixed-media). El primer documental que realizó Jean-René fue sobre la violencia física ejercida por un padre a su hija, tras la muerte de su madre. Mientras estaba en el colegio produjo varios documentales sobre el medioambiente, niños en programas de educación especial, campañas audiovisuales de “Respect Teens” (respeto a los adolescentes), etc. Tras graduarse del Art Institute, Jean-René ha trabajado en diferentes proyectos enfocados en abuso sexual, cáncer de mamas, salud mental, disparidad cultural. También ha trabajado en videos musicales y festivales de cine.
Como fruto de su trabajo, este artista haitiano ha ganado varios premios, incluyendo el primer lugar en la Galería de Arte Contemporáneo Online en 2021 en la competencia “ALL Water/Seascape” y ha tenido el honor de exponer en la prestigiosa Art Beat Miami/Art Basel en diciembre de 2021. En el marco del Día de la Bandera de Haití, El Regionalista tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a este multifacético artista haitiano. Cuéntame, ¿qué te motivó a ser artista?
Mi motivación partió temprano, pero no sabía exactamente lo que quería hacer. Lo que siempre supe es que quería estar en algún tipo de campo en el que pudiera tener algún tipo de influencia, en particular, sobre cómo la gente ve mi cultura. Yo crecí rodeado de arte en Haití, desde las casas coloridas, los Tap-Tap (buses públicos) y los murales en las calles. Cuando estaba en séptimo grado, en Miami, me encantaban las noticias y siempre las veía. Todo lo que venía de Haití era negativo, en términos de cómo se presentaba la imagen de Haití en los medios. Ahí pensé que quería ser fotógrafo, pero pensé que la fotografía limitaría el modo en el que yo quería transmitir mi mensaje a la audiencia. Fue entonces que pensé que debía entrar en lo audiovisual, y de ese modo podría revertir esa imagen que se estaba presentando. Entonces, mi papá me dio una cámara, fui a Haití y comencé a filmar. En octavo grado entré en un programa de excelencia en mi liceo, que era de cine. Fue un verano completo en el programa de cine en la Universidad de Miami. En esa época todavía no registraba por completo la idea de que era un artista. Yo solo estaba feliz de hacer lo que me gustaba y de haber entrado al programa de cine. Mi objetivo era mostrar imágenes positivas sobre Haití.
Es divertido, porque un amigo me dijo, por la celebración del 18 de mayo (Día de la Bandera), que ¿por qué no usaba una camiseta con la bandera? Y le dije que yo llevo la bandera conmigo todos los días, desde que tengo memoria. Mi trabajo siempre ha tenido que ver con contar la historia de mi cultura. Esa es mi representación de mí llevando la bandera: va en mi arte. Mi propósito ha sido siempre recontar nuestra historia. Para mí, es crucial contar la historia desde la subjetividad, cómo la observas desde dentro de la cultura, que es diferente a verla desde fuera. Como crecí con imágenes negativas sobre Haití en los medios, quise revertir esa imagen con mi cámara y recontar nuestra propia historia.
Tu arte es bastante político, ¿por qué decides tomar estos temas en tu arte?
Crecí en Haití y desde chico me encantó siempre la historia y la política. No soy de expresar mis ideas políticas en redes sociales, pero siempre quise ser político y expresar esas ideas, y ahí llegué al arte. Así comencé a crear un arte que expresara mis ideas políticas, de modo que mi audiencia supiera cómo me siento respecto a un tema determinado. El arte siempre ha sido un modo de comunicar ideas y así fue que encontré el modo de expresarlas al mundo.
¿Qué te motivó a ser instructor de konpa?
El Konpa, la música konpa existía desde los años 50. El baile no se había popularizado y quise ponerlo fuera de la comunidad haitiana. Así fue que en 2011 decidí que la música del Konpa tenía que ser acompañada de un baile para poder llegar a una audiencia mayor. Eso es lo que faltaba al Konpa, tener un baile estructurado. Había que buscar un modo de enseñarlo. Desde esa fecha hasta ahora hay muchos más instructores para una audiencia general, en Canadá, acá en Tampa, en Orlando, etc.
¿Aprendiste Konpa en Haití desde niño?
Crecí en una familia religiosa y bailar no era bien visto. La música siempre estuvo presente en mi vida, desde que tenía 6 o 7 años en mi casa, pero el baile estaba ausente. En la universidad, empecé a tomarlo más en serio y empecé a aprender. Yo tenía recuerdos de lo que había visto del baile en Haití. Tomé clases de otros bailes latinos y fui conectando cosas. La musicalidad es muy importante en la ejecución de los movimientos. Escuchar la música es crucial y, con lo que aprendí de los otros bailes, fui aplicándolo al baile. La música ha cambiado, ha evolucionado, desde lo tradicional, lo que existía antes a lo que es hoy. El baile también ha evolucionado. En Haití el bolero cubano es popular, todos crecimos escuchando bolero y viendo el baile. La salsa y el merengue también son masivos en Haití. De hecho, esos bailes son más populares que el konpa como baile. Hoy en día, los afrobeats son muy populares en Haití, incluso tiene su propio nombre en creole.
En tu opinión, ¿cuál es el mayor valor cultural de Haití?
El arte siempre ha sido importante, el arte visual, la pintura. En el mundo del arte, el arte haitiano siempre ha tenido una presencia fuera de Haití. Tampoco podemos olvidar que la independencia haitiana también es un tremendo valor cultural, ya que fue muy importante en ayudar a la abolición de la esclavitud en el mundo. Ayer, hablaba con un señor de Chad y me comentaba que cuando aprendió sobre la independencia de Haití le trajo mucha alegría al ver cómo Haití contribuyó tanto al resto del mundo. Cuando vemos los movimientos de independencia en Sudamérica: Bolívar en Colombia y Venezuela. La noción de libertad es un valor cultural central en Haití.
