En escuela Verde de Verano presentan texto “Colchagua Pandémica”

Víctor León, Cristián Urzúa y Melissa Bravo dieron vida a este libro que recoge su investigación sobre tres epidemias que asolaron Colchagua: la del cólera a fines del siglo XIX y la viruela y la gripe española, a comienzos del XX.

Este jueves 12 de enero, a las 19:00 horas en la sala A-112, en la casa central de la Universidad de O’Higgins en Rancagua, y en el contexto de la VIII Escuela Verde de Verano se desarrollará la presentación del libro “Colchagua Pandémica. Cólera, viruela e influenza en una sociedad provincial (1886-1920)”. La obra, de los autores Cristián Urzúa, Víctor León y Melissa Bravo, investigadores colchagüinos con varias publicaciones previas sobre historia local, se lanzará en el marco de la escuela que tradicionalmente organiza la Agrupación Bosques para Cachapoal.

Financiado por el Ministerio de Las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio de la región de O’Higgins, el texto es un notable esfuerzo por contextualizar la temática de las pestes que azotaron en el pasado al territorio colchagüino, en un momento en que aún padecemos la explosión del Covid-19.

Precisamente, la pandemia desatada hace tres años fue la inquietud que llevó a los tres autores del texto preguntarse: ¿esto ha ocurrido antes?; si es así, ¿cómo las generaciones previas enfrentaron las epidemias de su tiempo?

Si bien ya hay una amplia bibliografía sobre la pandemia, lo cierto es que este es el primer texto que aborda el tratamiento de otras pandemias vividas en el suelo colchagüino. 

En ese afán, los investigadores detectaron tres grandes epidemias infectocontagiosas en el territorio: la del cólera de 1886-1888, la viruela de 1904-1906 y la pandemia conocida como “la gripe española” de 1918-1920, que constituyen por sí mismas los tres capítulos que contiene el libro.

Mientras el primero, que se titula “Un visitante de mal carácter”, analiza la epidemia de cólera en Colchagua bajo la pluma de Víctor León, el segundo, “El azote de los pobres”, está dedicado a la viruela en la pluma de Cristián Urzúa y el capítulo III, “La gripe española en Colchagua”, a cargo de Melissa Bravo, se detiene en el contagio llegado a Chile cuando finalizaba la Primera Guerra Mundial, sus secuelas, las medidas sanitarias y el contexto de pobreza que provocó que el virus resultase mucho más letal.

Víctor León Donoso, conocido investigador sanfernandino y colaborador de El Regionalista, destacó el valor del texto puesto que “lleva el conocimiento de la historia a la gente. A diferencia de la academia que solo lo desarrolla en la universidad. Este trabajo aproxima la historia a la gente común y en ese sentido tiene un valor adicional”.

Por su parte Esteban Valenzuela, periodista e historiador rancagüino quien estará a cargo de comentar el texto, se refirió a la significancia de la obra: “conozco de cerca a algunos de los autores y han hecho una tremenda contribución a continuar armando las piezas de nuestro puzzle regional de la historia local. Ellos han hecho una nueva contribución al desarrollo de nuestra identidad e historia”.
