L@s rancagüin@s somos guerrer@s, salvajes, rurales y miner@s al momento en que se cumplen 208 años de la batalla que marcó un antes y un después en el proceso independentista, y la ciudad viva, el próximo 5 de octubre, que celebra 279 años de su fundación, realizada por el año 1743.

En la gestión municipal posdictadura el equipo inventó varios lemas para la ciudad que apelaban a revertir sus déficits emocionales: el ser en el mundo, la lírica cotidiana de nuestra ciudad; Ciudad Viva para los 250 años en 1983; luego, Rancagua Emprende, para diversificarse en lo económico, incluyendo apoyo a los micro emprendedores y cooperación pública-privada. Sin embargo, el principal fue Rancagua Amable, dignos de ser amados, que luego copiaron los capitalinos con Santiago Amable, porque para amar y ser fraternos hay que quererse y reconocer los valores. Leído a tres décadas, seguimos siendo una ciudad con baja amabilidad, porque somos una sociedad guerrera, dura, crítica, arisca, claro que con excepciones, cuando se vive la amistad en algunos clubes deportivos de rayuela de fútbol, algunos voluntariados y clubes de la tercera edad, pero en general en las empresas, política, sindicatos, incluso entre los artistas y mundo vecinal, las divisiones y descalificaciones son “un modo de ser” ¿Qué nos impide encarnar el principio olvidado de la modernidad que es la fraternidad y la amistad cívica? Pensamos que la belicosidad proviene de la hegemonía de sociabilidad por la minería dura, en el trabajo y en ausencia de lazo familiar normal por los largos desplazamientos, turnos y dureza del trabajo, lo que tiene datos en niveles mayores al promedio nacional en violencia intrafamiliar, salud mental, licencias y relaciones conflictivas. También, por la minería y sus sacrificados horarios de trabajo, con niveles altos de rupturas familiares por los difíciles turnos y la dureza del trabajo en el campo. Tal carencia, en parte, se alivió cuando secundamos a la parlamentaria Adriana Muñoz en la primera rebaja de jornadas y la prohibición de trabajar dos domingos seguidos. De ese modo, se posibilitó que el «minero» pudiese estar en familia y así no envilecerse por el vivir para trabajar ganando mucho dinero por sistemas de siete semanas de turnos seguidos, una suerte de pandemia psicosocial aberrante, con alto consumo, pero desastroso en “bienestar familiar y social”.
Lo de Ciudad Viva, activando los soportes culturales, fondos pro participación, duplicar áreas verdes con foco en las zonas populares, co-responsabilidad para inventar los pavimentos participativos, y con la peatonización del espacio público, para no ser solo la ciudad de los «patios interiores«- como recordaba el urbanista Lisandro Silva-, o el «puerto sin mar y sin gentes«, al decir de Oscar Castro cuando funda Los Inútiles para activar el alicaído ambiente cultural local, donde lo postmaterialista, cultural y trascendente ha sido subvalorado.
Lo de guerreros está marcado por tres factores: la batalla que fue genocidio patriota con una revancha sin límites y mil quinientos muertos. Las luchas sindicales de El Teniente, que lograron derechos, sufrieron la Matanza del Humo, se enfrentaron a Frei, a Allende y, de manera ejemplar, a la dictadura con la huelga y protesta que irrumpió desde Rancagua en 1983 y que tuvo como cabecillas a dirigentes tenientinos como Rodolfo Seguel y Eugenio López. Luego, la épica lucha de los contratistas con la huelga y protesta larga de 2005 a 2006. Pero, también, guerreros contra el centralismo, porque el Estado se construyó hacia el sur, generando instituciones públicas en Talca, mientras Rancagua permanecía siempre abandonada. Solo mediante la lucha posibilitamos la instalación de servicios policiales complejos, bibliotecas, escuela desde el Cabildo colonial, la universidad de O’Higgins, tras larga lucha y la persuasión a la expresidenta Michelle Bachelet en junio del 2013, cuando se lanzaron las diez iniciativas regionalistas que, la entonces candidata, recogió en su programa.
Todos somos mineros como mi abuelo Manuel, «enganchado» desde la Angostura de San Fernando para poder dar movilidad social a un familión como, también sucedió con cientos de familias que convirtieron a Graneros, Rancagua y los campamentos de Sewell, Caletones y Coya en Machalí, sus localidades a partir de 1905. En tanto, la tecnología ha logrado suavizar el carácter y los accidentes que disminuyeron ostensiblemente tras la tragedia del humo, las avalanchas y explosiones de roca, en la década de los 40 del siglo XX. También, el romper el machismo en la minería, con el ingreso de mujeres -“provocan tragedias en las galerías del cobre”-, sistemas de turnos más humanos y apoyo psicosocial, han generado mejoras notables. En el hábitat, sin duda el Plan Valle y las villas de mineros con viviendas dignas y plazas, fueron un antes y un después, más allá de la mitificación de la vida hacinada en Sewell. La prostitución comenzó su declive con la mayor presencia de los mineros con sus familias.
Hoy, la explotación minera de El teniente ha posibilitado que el cobre siga siendo el sueldo de Chile y la principal empresa, que en empleos directos e indirectos, mueve la economía local junto a los servicios. En ese sentido, no resultó casual que el presidente Allende, acompañado por el cardenal Raúl Silva Henríquez y por los grandes dirigentes del cobre de aquel tiempo, como Orlando Moraga, el “negro Olivares”, Hernán Castillo, Manuel Tapia, Lucho Vergara, Lucho Arredondo y el radical, compañero de mi padre en la brigada scout, Héctor Lagos, conmemorara, en nuestra plaza de los Héroes, junto a ministros y pueblo de Rancagua, “la segunda independencia de Chile”.
Pero somos rurales, además, que riega el valle más fértil de Chile, la bendición del Cachapoal – nuestro “río loco” o “nunca domado”- jamás seco por la montaña con cumbres de 4 mil, y la tierra fértil donde todo crece rápido, según una lingüista mapuche, refiriéndose al propio nombre de Rancagua. La poesía ruralista de la comarca de ensueño, perfecta y melancólica de Oscar Castro, es un signo de aquello. La lírica de los lirios, las acequias, las viñas y sus frutos, los arrieros y las cantoras, la fiesta y la melancolía del alba a la noche.
Y salvajes, porque de acá son los mapuches promaucaes, quienes, para los quechuas, era la gente salvaje que se opuso a la invasión Incaica hacia 1480 por el ejército de “promaucas, cauques y pencones”, según el propio Inca Garcilaso; los mismos que guerrearon contra Valdivia, y que habitaban cerca de los ríos y lagunas en una habitar donde la fiesta, el fuego y el fumar (vestigios en La Granja de pipas donde se fumaba de yerbas medicinales a hojas de quillay y boldo), son parte de una historia que pervive. Varios cronistas los describen como fiesteros y malos para esclavizarse en la encomiendas. Salvajes en su barrio rojo de las tres estaciones (al sur, a Doñihue y a Sewell), donde los burdeles se mezclaban con quintas de recreo, caldo de cultivo de amores rectos y torcidos, y la violencia naturalizada en muchos recovecos donde el agua ardiente, la chicha, el chacolí y el vino generaron carácter y excesos. Los caciques Mauro y Guaglén, la Quintrala y los Incas que acá pervivieron, son los abuelos y abuelas que nos marcan en el valle de las dos cordilleras, en el centro de Chile, de luz oblicua y filuda, melancólica y borrascosa.
Salvajes, con sus claroscuros en la crítica y los excesos con el alcohol y las drogas, algo más que el promedio, porque, a su vez, Rancagua es dulcificada por los árboles más bellos del mundo y porque aún se puede ir a caminar al borde del río y subir la montaña para buscar serenidad, o ver un canal de riego que sana nuestras infancias dañadas como toda vida.
