La semana pasada celebramos el Día del Libro. Sin embargo, en Chile hay poco que celebrar en materia de libros y comprensión lectora, debido a los bajos índices de lectura y el elevado precio del producto de mercado que es el libro. Mucho se ha discutido sobre sacar el IVA a los libros, pero nunca se llega a nada. El gobierno de Boric viene con nuevos aires, pero aún no se ven atisbos de que este sea un tema en la agenda. De hecho, no es algo que estuviera en su programa de gobierno. Y muchos se preguntarán, ¿qué importa que la gente lea o no? o ¿por qué el precio de los libros es tan caro en Chile?
Las respuestas son claras: si queremos a un pueblo que no piense, viva el analfabetismo. Estudio tras estudio demuestra los múltiples beneficios de la lectura. Leer es el mejor ocio que existe, ya que nos obliga a utilizar una serie de funciones cerebrales que nos hacen pensar, asociar, analizar, imaginar y abstraer. Incluso la lectura digital tiene beneficios. Sin embargo, no da igual lo que se lee. Si leemos solo en Internet, no necesariamente estamos leyendo cosas que están bien escritas. Es solo ver los memes que se viralizan por redes sociales. Las faltas de ortografía están a la orden del día. A ver, ha mutado en “ha ver” o “haber”; el uso de s, c y z se ha hecho intercambiable, etc. Ni decir la creatividad en el uso de comas, signos de puntuación y exclamación. De pronto, nos hemos internacionalizado en el uso de palabras que tienen una traducción al español, pero que todos parecen desconocer. En política, se ha pegado el uso de hablar de una situación líquida, cuando en castellano la palabra fluido existe, pero brilla por su ausencia en la mente de muchos. La mayor parte de estos vicios ocurren por falta de lectura, que limita nuestro vocabulario, aumenta las faltas de ortografía y reduce nuestra capacidad de análisis y hasta de empatía.
¿Empatía? ¿Qué tiene que ver la empatía con la lectura? Sepa que mucho, particularmente en la lectura de ficción. Una de las cosas más importantes en la construcción de un personaje es que tenga una conexión emocional con el lector. Según la historiadora norteamericana Lynn Hunt, el concepto de los derechos humanos nació con la popularización de la novela en Europa del siglo XVIII, lo que invitó a los lectores de la época a entrar en la subjetividad del Otro y ver el mundo desde otra perspectiva. En el siglo XIX, novelas como Les Misérables de Victor Hugo y Oliver Twist de Charles Dickens llamaron la atención de sus lectores hacia los temas de pobreza y desigualdad, y fue una novela, Uncle Tom’s Cabin de Harriet Beecher Stowe, que convirtió el abolicionismo en un movimiento masivo, precisamente, porque sus lectores tomaron conciencia de la humanidad y del sufrimiento de los esclavos.
Muchos no recuerdan la metaficción, ni los intertextos de El Quijote, considerada la primera novela moderna del mundo occidental. Gran cantidad de lectores recuerdan las anécdotas mundanas de Sancho, la locura delirante del protagonista, la Dulcinea, etc. Tristemente, muy pocos leen hoy un libro de más de mil páginas. En definitivas cuentas, los lectores se quedan con la emoción que le provocó tal o cual personaje o situación. Esa simulación es de gran importancia y no todos entienden esa importante función de la lectura.
Cuando leemos un diario digital, como El Regionalista o cualquier otro, podemos leer contenido más o menos interesante y, además, logramos el objetivo de informarnos sobre la actualidad. Ese acto de leer nos permite utilizar capacidad de análisis, asociación de ideas, entre otros. Si el artículo nos hace pensar, eso ya es un buen signo. Sin embargo, la ficción nos lleva más allá, a mundos imaginados o a espejos de nuestra realidad. Por eso, lectores, les invito a leer, ya sea de modo digital o a la antigua, dando vueltas a la página de un libro. En la búsqueda de fomentar el hábito y, si me lo permite, le voy a recomendar algunos títulos. Antes de ello, quiero dar cuenta de una creciente realidad: hoy la mayoría de las que leen en Chile somos mujeres, y es una situación que no solo ocurre en nuestro país, sino que lo vemos en muchos lugares del mundo. Un signo de ello es la gran cantidad de autoras que se destacan cada día más en diferentes lugares del planeta. Mientras más lectoras, más escritoras. Es algo bastante lógico querer leernos.
En primer lugar, le voy a recomendar a varias autoras contemporáneas del Cono Sur que se han llevado premios internacionales, y que merecen la atención de lectores en el mundo entero por producir libros bien escritos, de temáticas muy variadas y en diferentes géneros literarios.
1. Los peligros de fumar en la cama y Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego de la argentina Mariana Enríquez, son dos colecciones de cuentos espectaculares. Se podría argumentar que Enríquez es la mejor cuentista en español de lo que va de este siglo.
2. La trilogía policial (Mujer equivocada, El miserere de los cocodrilos, y Qué ganas de no verte nunca más)de la uruguaya Mercedes Rosende. No solo es una historia policial bien narrada, llena de vericuetos, sino que la construcción del personaje de su protagonista, Úrsula, es magnífica e inolvidable. No por nada es best seller en Europa con traducción a varios idiomas.
3. La mujer que escribió Frankenstein, de Ester Cross es una joyita de novela sobre Mary Shelley. Cross rescata la historia de exclusión de la autora de este clásico de la ciencia ficción. La narración es ágil, la prosa hermosa y la historia envuelve.
4. América alucinada, de la argentina Betina González es una novela que, tal como anuncia el título, es totalmente alucinante en la descripción de una sociedad que se desintegra y que enloquece. Desde Dónde van a morir los elefantes de José Donoso que no teníamos un libro tan bueno sobre Estados Unidos escrito por un autor latinoamerican@. En esta novela de González se juega con el género de la distopía de modo magistral.
5. Cadáver exquisito, de Agustina Bazterrica es otra distopía que nos hace pensar sobre el consumo de carne, entre muchos otros temas filosóficos. La manera descarnada en que la autora trata sobre los seres humanos como objetos, la relación que tenemos con los animales da para pensar y repensar la sociedad en la que vivimos.
6. La dimensión desconocida, de la chilena Nona Fernández nos lleva a la exploración del pasado traumático de Chile de un modo nada convencional. Esta novela es una de varias que corresponden a un corpus creciente de autores chilenos que caben dentro de la categoría de la literatura del trauma.

Además de este listado de libros publicados en la última década, quiero recomendarles algunos clásicos menos conocidos de la literatura chilena. En particular, le voy a hablar de 3 que no tienen mucho en común, pero que le aseguro lo harán pensar sobre nuestra realidad, pasada y actual.
1. Gabriela Mistral. Pensando a Chile, una tentativa contra lo imposible de Jaime Quezada, volumen en el cual se reúne buena parte de la prosa de Mistral. Quezada, el compilador de los textos, hace una excelente selección de cartas, discursos y ensayos de la poeta que hablan de educación, feminismo, política, etc. Tras su lectura, descubrirá que Mistral no era lo que le enseñaron en el colegio.
2. El Río de Alfredo Gómez Morel, una novela escrita en los años 60, la cual cuenta la historia de un criminal chileno. Lo interesante de este libro es que fue escrito por un ladrón real que nos pasea por la vida que lo llevó a ese mundo del lumpen. Es una obra testimonial, pero que se abre a una dimensión que va mucho más allá del mero testimonio.
3. Los altísimos de Hugo Correa, novela de los años cincuenta, una rareza en las letras chilenas no solo por ser ciencia ficción, sino por la calidad dentro del género. Tanto así, que el mismísimo Ray Bradbury, el de Crónicas marcianas, elogió este libro, que en su época pasó sin mucha gloria.
Por último, le dejo 3 de mis favoritos:
1. La última niebla de María Luisa Bombal, una novela adelantadísima a su tiempo, escrita con virtuosismo y con una visión única.
2. Rayuela de Julio Cortázar, un libro sobre literatura que marcó a muchos de mi generación. Es una historia infinita y maravillosa para todos los que gozamos del placer de la lectura.
3. Estrella distante de Roberto Bolaño, una novela corta y menos conocida que narra los horrores de la dictadura militar desde un punto de vista absolutamente no convencional.
Con estos listados personales y arbitrarios, pero de una lectora empedernida, los dejo invitados al placer de la lectura. Pueden seguir o no mis recomendaciones, pero agarren un libro y nunca dejen de leer. Están tod@s convidad@s.
