La escuela de danza más completa y premiada de la VI región, academia Artydanza, cumplió 5 años en Rancagua y este 2 de abril celebrará en grande ese acontecimiento. Artydanza cuenta con gran cantidad de títulos internacionales desde que comenzaron a competir, entre ellos: 8 títulos en el último World Latin Dance Cup y en el último All Dance, ganaron 11 títulos mundiales entre terceros y primeros lugares en categorías como salsa, bachata, jazz lírico, jazz contemporáneo, y diferentes modalidades de danzas latinas. El Regionalista conversó con su fundadora y dueña, Paula Durán, quien nos contó de su historia y el gran evento que preparan para celebrar el lustro de existencia de su academia.

¿Desde cuándo vives en Rancagua?
Llevo 10 años en Rancagua. Yo llegué en el 2004, cuando vine de jueza al Salsa Open en La Rumba de Membrillar. Después, me vine a trabajar contratada por ese mismo local para dar clases de salsa. En el 2005, firmé contrato con el dueño y después abrimos la misma salsoteca en Valdivia ese año hasta el 2009, después me fui a Valparaíso con la salsoteca La Rumba hasta el 2012. Quisimos montar la salsoteca acá, pero no encontramos el lugar idóneo y, como no encontramos nada, puse un restaurante por un año, pero no me gustó el rubro. Fue entonces que me hicieron la propuesta de hacer clases en Valpo Cervecería. En esos sociales me empapé del baile, y vi las ganas que había de tomar clases. Así, empezamos a hacer clases con mi hijo Diego en el Valpo y en el Justos y Pecadores. Trabajábamos toda la semana de martes a sábado. También, hicimos clases en una sede, después en un gimnasio en Los Alpes, y comenzó a crecer la propuesta de sumar más gente. Ya había postergado abrir mi escuela por 2 años y ahí me decidí: monté la escuela y ahora celebramos nuestro aniversario, que es el 5 de febrero. Por la fecha, nunca podemos hacerlo en febrero y siempre celebramos el aniversario en abril. A fin de año realizamos una gala anual, y presentamos las coreos antes de mostrarlas en un mundial. Claro que eso quedó interrumpido por la pandemia en los últimos 2 años.
Cuéntame, ¿cuál es la oferta de tu escuela de danza?
Nosotros partimos con bailes latinos, pero cuando empezamos a trabajar con niños empezamos a incluir ballet. Cuando entré al ruedo del All Dance tuve que buscar otros horizontes y montar una enorme parrilla de baile: jazz lírico, acrodance, twerk, pole, salsa, bachata, reggaetón, entrenamiento técnico para bailarines, tanto para niños y adultos. Durante la pandemia trabajamos online, y eso nos permitió incluir a otros instructores y disciplinas; eso hace crecer a los chicos en la base técnica, les da más herramientas.
¿Cómo llegaste al baile?
Mi formación profesional parte como autodidacta, tomé ballet en el colegio y gimnasia. Partí a los 16 bailando danza moderna, a los 17 me enamoré de la salsa. En esa época no había nada, no habían profesores, y eran muy pocos los que manejaban ese estilo de baile. Estaba Salsa Brava, habían bailarines dedicados a coreos de salsa. A los 18 entré a un ballet y me formé en la técnica y trabajé en Salsa con Clase y así nos seguimos formando. Llegó Tamara Kiriyak y formó gente en Ballroom, eso nos sirvió para formarnos en lo coreográfico. Luego de eso, llegó la salsa on1 y on2. En el 2002, empiezan las redes sociales y vimos que en otros países habían talleres; en Chile no se veía eso. Cristián, mi exmarido, y yo nos fuimos y empezamos a recorrer el mundo. Mi primer workshop fue con Hernán Rey, argentino, que fue pareja de Karen Cañete cuando tenía 7 años. Empezamos a formarnos como autodidactas en Chile y después con bailarines de Argentina. Después, en congresos internacionales, con grandes como Eddy Torres en salsa; en bachata, con Korke y Judith. En la actualidad, hice un mastery con Ataca y Alemana. Estoy terminando mastery en pachanga y chachachá online con Betsy Cortés, ligado al afro.; mastery con Alberto Valdés, en ritmos afro. Esto me lo exige mi trabajo como jueza. También estoy en un mastery con Félicien en kizomba.
Mira, hay profesores que no son los mejores bailarines y bailarines que no son los mejores profesores, pero lo que un bailarín no puede perder nunca es la constancia. No eres el mejor profesor o bailarín, pero ser constante te mantiene en conocimiento de lo que está pasando en un baile.
¿Cuáles son tus títulos en competencias?
Tengo una larga lista: en 1998-99 salí campeona regional de salsa en la V región, luego primer lugar en clasificatoria nacional al campeonato. En ese campeonato, saqué el segundo lugar en el 2000. En 2001 fui invitada al Congreso Mambo Argentina, por primera vez se invitaba a una pareja chilena. Después de eso, no volví a competir hasta el 2018 y saqué el título mundial en Latin Dance Cup en la categoría bachata madre e hijo, en Orlando. Yo no soy muy buena en las competencias, me gusta más tomar clases, pero ahora estoy preparando coreografía porque voy a volver a competir. Todavía no sé en cuál categoría.
¿Nos puedes contar sobre tu evento de quinto aniversario?
Estamos muy contentos porque vienen Karen y Ricardo. Es difícil coincidir con ellos dos al mismo tiempo en Chile. Karen vive en Viña y Ricardo en Miami. Justo se dio que están renovando visa de trabajo en los Estados Unidos, entonces tienen que estar en Chile por un tiempo y aprovecharán de hacer una gira por el país. Yo mantengo comunicación constante con Karen, entonces, justo conversamos y le pregunté que cuándo venía a Chile, y me cuenta esto de la visa a punto de vencer. Le propongo que vengan a nuestro evento de aniversario y ahí cerramos el trato altiro. Ellos salen caros, pero yo los quería. Van a estrenar coreografía, van a hacer workshops y el show también tendrá estudiantes de la escuela que ganaron en el All Dance; también viene Karen Cañete, Cristián Paredes con su pareja y su grupo, etc. Viene gente de Santiago, de otras partes de la VI región.
Esperamos que la gente de Rancagua tenga buena respuesta, porque cuesta acá. A veces, hay gente del medio que no los conoce, con el tremendo currículum que tienen. Piensa que son los únicos bailarines del mundo nominados a un Grammy y lo ganaron, en categoría a la mejor coreografía, eso no había ocurrido nunca. Participaron en el concurso de baile norteamericano televisado World of Dance, de Jennifer López y Derek Hough, en 2018 y ellos allí se destacaron mucho, tuvieron relevancia mundial. Aunque no ganaron, su participación les abrió muchas puertas. Por ejemplo, después de eso presentaron un espectáculo de baile en la NBA, algo inédito.

Tremenda escuela!! Tengo el honor de formar parte de ella desde hace años como alumna y actualmente como entrenadora. La Paula nos lleva a todos, profes y alumnos a vivir la danza a otro nivel, y eso es hermoso, nos hace crecer y exigirnos al 100% a cada uno.
