Este pasado 29 de abril se celebró el Día Internacional de la Danza. Este día de conmemoración es bastante menos conocido que otras festividades, en parte porque se declaró hace 40 años, y porque la sociedad no le da al arte el valor que tiene. La historia de esta fecha se remonta a 1982 cuando, por iniciativa del Comité Internacional de Danza, la Unesco proclamó el 29 de abril como su su día. Se escogió esta fecha porque corresponde al natalicio del bailarín, maestro y coreógrafo Jean-Georges Noverre, en 1727.
Para quien no es bailarín de ballet, el nombre de Noverre no le dice nada. Este coreógrafo francés del siglo XVIII fue el creador del género de ballet d´action, que es un género híbrido de ballet simbólico y expresivo. Es decir, un precursor del ballet narrativo del siglo XIX, que es lo que vemos hoy en escena. Antes de Noverre, el ballet consistía en producciones enfocadas en escenarios y vestuario más que en el baile. A partir de ballet d´action, se enfocó en la expresión física y emocional de los bailarines.
La danza, a grandes rasgos, es expresión corporal o lenguaje del cuerpo. Así, el baile es una forma de expresión e interacción social acompañada de ritmos acústicos, con fines de entretenimiento, artísticos, culturales y religiosos. La danza existe desde el tiempo de las cavernas y es practicada en todas las culturas que existen en el mundo.
El objetivo del Día Internacional de la Danza es celebrar el baile como una disciplina de arte universal y diversa, reuniendo a todos los que han elegido esta forma de expresión sin barreras culturales, políticas y éticas. Existen múltiples tipos de danza, desde la folclórica, clásica y moderna. Aquellos que acuden a academias y universidades son bailarines profesionales que llevan esta forma de arte a su máxima expresión.
Sin embargo, también estamos los que nos dedicamos a esta forma artística de modo amateur. Todos, absolutamente todos, somos capaces de aprender a bailar dentro de nuestras capacidades. Desde el bailarín social hasta el clásico, que danza en un teatro, puede expresar belleza, emociones, y conexión.
Los beneficios de la danza son múltiples y variados, desde el funcionamiento cardiovascular hasta la relajación, socialización y coordinación motora. Por lo general, se piensa que el baile es un acto recreativo que no tiene ninguna relación con el cerebro o el pensamiento. Sin embargo, la danza sí está conectada a nuestra mente, ya que hay patrones musicales, ritmo, pasos. Para memorizarlos, usamos una serie de habilidades mentales en la ejecución de un baile.

En general, prefiero no hablar de mis experiencias personales, pero en esta ocasión me parece adecuado compartir con mis lectores lo que la danza significa para mí. Comencé a bailar muy joven, en las típicas clases de ballet de actividades extra escolares. Recuerdo unos talleres en la Casa de la Cultura, donde comencé mi camino en esta forma de expresión artística. La disciplina del ballet era en exceso rigurosa, y la presión para mantenerse delgada fueron dos de las razones por las cuales abandoné la idea de continuar con la danza clásica.
Como el latín para aprender lenguas romances, el ballet fue una tremenda base para aprender postura, gracia y disciplina. Durante los años de universidad, dejé el baile por los libros y no fue hasta mucho tiempo después que me reconecté con mis zapatillas de baile. Ya en mis treinta, casi por accidente, descubrí la danza árabe. Conminada por una colega de universidad, conocí a mi maestra, una profesora atípica: judía, orfebre, historiadora del arte y bibliotecaria. Una mujer fascinante que se convirtió en mi profesora y amiga. Durante años practiqué esta maravillosa forma de arte performativo, pero me enamoré de las danzas tradicionales del norte de África, esas que se bailan con un bastón en la cabeza. Con el tiempo, y ya haciendo clases en la universidad, decidí dar clases gratuitas y compartir este arte con mis alumnas. Fue una experiencia en la que aprendí muchísimo. Allí supe que el verdadero modo de perfeccionarse en una danza, como en los idiomas, es enseñarlo.
Al poco tiempo, mi madre enfermó de cáncer y perdí mi trabajo. Nada se puede comparar al dolor de perder a los padres, y yo perdí a dos de una sola vez. Fue en ese momento que decidí que debía hacer algo para procesar toda la pena que sentía. Bailar sola o en coreografías grupales, con otras mujeres, ya no me llenaba el alma. Durante mis meses sola en Rancagua, cerrando el ciclo del programa de televisión de mi madre y haciendo el duelo sin mi marido ni mi hijo, descubrí los bailes latinos. Probé con todos, pero ninguno me cautivó como el tango y la kizomba. Ambos son bailes de conexión, de abrazo y no hay nada más reconfortante que bailar con otro, mientras uno es abrazado por otro ser humano.
Como siempre me han gustado los bailes provenientes de África, era natural que me apasionara por los bailes urbano populares de Angola. Después de varios años aprendiendo kizomba y semba, y dada la falta de profesores en nuestra región, decidimos comenzar a dar clases con mi marido. Nuevamente, se cumplió la máxima que al enseñar se aprende y nos hemos enriquecido mucho de nuestros alumnos. Durante la pandemia comenzamos a enseñar online, lo cual es mucho más difícil, pero como ambos somos docentes de profesión, encontramos un método. Esa experiencia nos proveyó no solo de alumnos con los que llevamos dos años, sino un grupo de amigos. Además, con ellos formamos un grupo de baile llamado Kutonoka Chile, que ahora se ha ampliado a otros rincones del país, junto a dos profesoras más: una en Iquique y la otra en la V región.
En ese recorrido por la kizomba, durante la pandemia, dimos con el gran maestro de este arte, el Mestre Petchu, nativo de Angola. Nos inscribimos en un curso de formación de profesores con colegas brasileños, y luego con otros de Hispanoamérica. Por alguna razón, hubo una gran conexión con Petchu y se formó una amistad. Hoy estamos nuevamente entrenando con él como si fuera desde cero, porque nunca se termina de aprender. Nuestra pasión por estos bailes es tal que logramos llevar a Petchu a nuestra comunidad en Tampa, Estados Unidos, y a fin de año lo traeremos a Chile, para que nuestra comunidad kizombera experimente al mejor de todos, pero, además, aprenda de las raíces, de las danzas tradicionales y la cultura de Angola. Mestre Petchu no es solo un maestro de baile, sino un embajador de su país.
Usted pensará que como comencé a bailar de pequeña, es natural que haya desarrollado este interés. Sin embargo, le aseguro que cualquiera puede aprender. He tenido alumnos con dos pies izquierdos, mi marido no bailó nada hasta pasados los 40 y ahora enseña conmigo. El baile social es un pasatiempo que trae una serie de beneficios, tanto para su salud física como mental. Para mí, lo más importante es la sensación de felicidad generada por la oxitocina que se libera al bailar abrazado. Si no lo ha experimentado, se lo recomiendo. Hoy Rancagua tiene múltiples ofertas para aprender a bailar. Hay dos escuelas que tienen destacados profesores con premios internacionales: ArtyDanza de Paula Durán (@artydanza), a la cual le dedicamos una nota (La magia del baile: 5 años de ArtyDanza) y Barrio Candela (@barriocandelaes), que también destacamos en una nota (Barrio Candela: afro, raíces y rueda de casino).
