El jueves 8 de septiembre de 2022, un poco pasado el mediodía en horario chileno, el palacio de Buckingham anunció la muerte de Elizabeth Windsor, la reina Isabel II de Gran Bretaña, a la edad de 96 años y después de siete décadas sobre el trono. Desde entonces, los canales de televisión no hablan de otra cosa. Tal vez, después de la experiencia exhaustiva y divisiva del plebiscito, estaban ansiosos de cubrir algo distinto. A fin de cuentas, no hay nada que le guste más a la televisión chilena que la farándula, y no hay nada más farandulero que la familia real británica. Es de esperar que el funeral de la reina, la coronación de su hijo como el rey Carlos III, y los discursos y desfiles que acompañarán a estos eventos también serán transmitidos en vivo en Chile como en gran parte del mundo.
Es raro que la muerte de una señora de casi cien años sea tema de noticia, y aún más que desate emociones tan fuertes como las expresiones de duelo masivo que se han visto en las últimas veinticuatro horas. La monarquía británica capta tanto interés en el mundo contemporáneo justamente por ser algo anacrónico, más apropiado a un cuento de hadas, una película de Disney, o a una telenovela que a una sociedad posindustrial, multicultural, y globalizada, como es el Reino Unido en pleno siglo XXI. Para muchos de sus admiradores, en un mundo de tanto cambio e incertidumbre, la reina Isabel II representaba algo eterno y esencial del carácter británico, lo que capta la famosa frase “Keep calm and carry on”(mantengan la calma y sigan adelante), una combinación de determinación, de sentido de deber y, francamente, también de represión emocional, a lo cual muchos atribuyen los éxitos históricos del imperio británico.
Sin embargo, es impresionante darse cuenta cuánto ha cambiado el mundo durante la larga vida y reino de la difunta monarca. Cuando nació el 21 de abril de 1926, el imperio británico todavía era el más extenso en la historia del mundo. Un imperio sobre el cual, como se solía decir, el sol nunca se ponía, ya que tocaba los cinco continentes e incorporaba mil millones de habitantes. Acababa de ganar la “Gran Guerra” (nadie sabía entonces que otra, incluso más devastadora, estaba por venir), lo que le permitió agregar excolonias alemanas y otomanas a sus dominios, y la ciudad de Londres se mantenía como el epicentro del capitalismo global, posición que ya ocupaba durante dos siglos.
Solo unos pocos observadores, especialmente astutos, podían darse cuenta entonces que el imperio ya había pasado su auge y que su ocaso se acercaba. Es verdad que nuevas potencias mundiales, como los Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética, habían aparecido para competir con su dominio mundial; que se vio obligado a reconocer la independencia de Irlanda, su colonia más antigua, en 1922; y que, al otro lado del mundo, un “faquir medio desnudo,” en las famosas palabras desdeñosas de Winston Churchill, lideraba un movimiento pacífico y masivo que terminaría por quitarle su colonia más valiosa. Pero estas nubes negras lejanas no tapaban el sol que brillaba sobre el imperio británico, que tanto como su monarquía parecía imponente, inamovible, y eterna.
La juventud de la princesa Isabel fue marcada por grandes hechos históricos, como la amenaza del fascismo, la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y los comienzos de la Guerra Fría. Su llegada al trono vino súbitamente en 1952 con la muerte inesperada de su padre, el rey Jorge VI, de cáncer, con tan solo 56 años. En aquellos tiempos, los daños del bombardeo nazi a Londres aún se veían por todas partes, el ya legendario Churchill estaba en su último mandato de primer ministro, y la sociedad británica era todavía muy tradicional y conservadora. La explosión de cultura juvenil de los años 60 estaba por venir, y nadie sospechaba que grupos como los Beatles y los Rolling Stones iban a cambiar la música a nivel mundial. Noto de pasada que el septuagenario Mick Jagger comentó ayer por Twitter que, de niño (!), admiraba mucho a la joven reina. En las décadas siguientes, no menos de quince primeros ministros -desde Churchill hasta la actual Liz Truss, quien asumió dos días antes de la muerte de la reina- se reunieron con Isabel II, igual que diez presidentes norteamericanos y un sinfín de líderes mundiales, figuras culturales, representantes de ONG y de movimientos sociales.
Es verdad que la autoridad de la reina Isabel II era puramente simbólica, ya que no ejercía el poder político, diplomático o militar, como lo hizo su tocaya, la gran Isabel I, quien desafió al poder de la España de los Habsburgos, puso fin a un largo período de inestabilidad doméstica, y fomentó un florecimiento cultural, marcado por las grandes obras de Shakespeare. Aquellos tiempos pertenecen a un pasado lejano, y sería injusto culpar a Isabel II, quien nunca tomó decisiones políticas por los crímenes históricos del imperialismo británico, como algunos comentaristas de izquierda han querido hacer. Pero hay ocasiones en las cuales el simbolismo tiene mucha importancia. El papel principal de la recién fallecida reina fue de manejar las relaciones protocolares entre Gran Bretaña y sus antiguas colonias en la era poscolonial. El imperio estaba en proceso avanzado de desintegración cuando asumió la corona. De hecho, cuando recibió la noticia de la muerte de su padre, se encontraba en una visita protocolar a Kenia, ya en las primeras etapas de su guerra de independencia.
Durante la época de la Guerra Fría y de la descolonización, los nuevos países independientes de África, de Asia, y del Caribe no quisieron más aceptar el control político, económico, o militar de la “madre patria”, pero la mayoría de ellos sí aceptaron un lazo puramente simbólico con la figura maternal de la joven reina. El Commonwealth, una asociación libre de excolonias británicas liderada por la reina, mantiene lazos culturales entre los países que antes formaron parte del imperio. Durante las décadas de su reino, tanto Isabel II como su cónyuge Felipe y sus hijos y nietos han viajado de forma constante a través del mundo para reforzar a estos lazos culturales e históricos que ayudan, de forma no menor, a mantener la influencia cultural global de Gran Bretaña.
Pero hay muchos factores que sugieren que este papel simbólico de matriarca del Commonwealth era únicamente ligado a la figura de Isabel II y que no le sobrevivirá. Tanto los vascos y los catalanes como los escoceses y los norirlandeses, han reclamado en repetidas ocasiones su autonomía y hasta su independencia. Un referéndum sobre la independencia de Escocia fracasó en 2014 por un margen de 55%-45%, pero esto fue antes del “Brexit,” que la gran mayoría de los escoceses rechazaron. La primera ministra de Escocia, Nicola Sturgeon, ha exigido una segunda votación, y sin la figura unificadora de Isabel I, es probable que llegue tarde o temprano.
