Las ensoñaciones de un niño de Peumo

Jorge Bravo Cuervo, escritor que vivió en Peumo entre sus 4 y 12 años, en Las Peumas de Andrés nos conduce a la aldea de la infancia feliz en un texto lleno de color construido a partir de imágenes en sepia y una memoria aguda cargada de sabiduría.

Antes que Peumo quedara impreso en las cintas de las Super 8 o los VHS. Antes incluso que la plaza, la iglesia, los caminos de Peumo corrieran de mano en mano a caballo de las imágenes Polaroid o en las reproducciones en papel de 8×12, gatilladas por las primeras cámaras fotográficas “instantáneas” de los 80. Antes de eso, las memorias fieles de niños y niñas de entonces grababan los paseos de domingo, los sermones de los curas en el catecismo de las primeras comuniones, el asesinato pasional que remeció al pueblo, las trifulcas que separaban aguas entre hermanas adultas o la presencia esquiva del papá de los fines de semana.

Las Peumas de Andrés, escrito por Jorge Bravo Cuervo es eso, un relicario de la vida de Peumo en los 60 y comienzos de los 70, en voz del niño de entonces, que tuvo su primera edición en 2015, la segunda en 2020 y una reedición en 2021.

En palabras del autor, “son textos cortos, unos más poéticos otros más prosaicos, en formato apaisado, que incluye un glosario de marcas, equipos de fútbol, películas que vi de niño. Es un repaso por los recuerdos, escrito desde la perspectiva de niño. No es de un adulto recordando la niñez”.

Transitan por las páginas de Las Peumas de Andrés las ensoñaciones (que es el sentido de peumas en mapudungun) de una infancia intensa en el relato que corrió al ritmo de un pueblo que empezaba a dar un giro hacia la agricultura de agroexportación poco después que a inicios de los 70, Bravo migrara.

Descripciones vivas, poéticas por el impacto que dejan en quien las lee pero con métrica libre, incubadas en las tardes de parrón y sandía de las tradicionales casas de patio grande o las casasquinta del Peumo sesentero. Los recuerdos fluyen jalonados por los rostros y acontecimientos que marcaron la infancia del autor: las mujeres familiares, los amores posibles y de los otros, las primeras expediciones en el tren de entonces o en las clásicas citrolas, las devociones religiosas y las políticas que despuntaban.

Las mujeres de Bravo, retratadas en Las Peumas merecen mención parte. La Ñeca, la Peta, Teresa (que con sus importaciones de Graneros, le abrió el gusto por el Milo y el Cerelac), la tía Julia, su madre. Y si de negocios se trata, ninguno más sabroso que el inocente y picarón acuerdo infantil suscrito con la Marcelita: tú me muestras el pirulín, yo mi poto. La deslumbrante Rita Primera, reina del pueblo, Verónica a quien hacía guardia a la salida de la misa, la hija de los patrones, Isabel o Betty, aparecen en un retrato con trazas de ilusión eterna y decepción amorosa.

Pero también se encuentra en estas páginas la esperanza que despertaba en muchos peuminos la travesía de Salvador Allende hasta conquistar el poder en el 70, un flash de la historia política de entonces, tal como fue la entrega del fundo Codao a sus inquilinos por obra y gracia de la Reforma Agraria o, en el micro mundo familiar, el desaire que Marisol, la hermana adolescente y futura militante socialista, le hace al candidato Frei Montalva, dejándolo con la mano estirada, en uno de sus baños de multitudes cuando visitó Peumo.

No hay en Las Peumas de Andrés historias largas ni desenlaces probables. Hay evocaciones que tocan fibras y que, inevitablemente, transportan a la aldea de infancia, esa que nos ha marcado a todos, sea en el pueblo al estilo Peumo, la población o el barrio en el que crecimos. En el texto de Bravo hay una oferta que conduce a reescribir la propia historia de cada un@, mirándose al espejo de unas ensoñaciones cuya materia prima, surgida de la vida del pueblo, puede ser obvia pero que contadas y cantadas desde la emoción del autor son más que un homenaje a la aldea. Es el tributo al derecho a una infancia feliz.

Jorge Bravo Cuervo, nació en Peumo en 1960 y luego vivió allí entre los 4 y los 12 años. Sociólogo, estudió en Santiago y luego en la Universidad Católica de Lima. Ha trabajado casi toda su vida en Temuco, primero con comunidades mapuche y luego en el Senda, organismo estatal dedicado a la prevención de consumo de alcohol y drogas.

Sus publicaciones en general han ido de la mano con su trabajo de campo. En 1996 publicó Los hombres de Rucacura, sobre los cochayuyeros de la costa de esa localidad de La Araucanía, obra escrita en conjunto con la comunidad. También, en conjunto con un trabajador social, escribió sobre los temporeros mapuche en la zona central y, en 2015, sobre la experiencia de cinco aldeas rurales construidas en los años ’90 por la Fundación Luxemburgo en el entorno de Romeral y Teno en la Región del Maule.
