Precisamente, es Miguel Zorro Guevara, suboficial de Carabineros, el personaje a partir del cual Soto hila, con pluma afinada, un thriller policíaco que lo pone en un lugar destacado de la novela negra chilena. Sostenida en una antropología e historicidad que remece, la historia desgrana los azares del Zorro y el cabo de Carabineros Molina, en su porfiada cruzada por descubrir al asesino de un joven abogado, promesa política, a quien tres balazos, a boca de jarro, tronchan sus afanes de llegar al senado por el Maule. El empeño de los dos carabineros enfrenta una trama oscura, en que las platas políticas están al centro como, también, encumbrados apellidos que pululan entre dos palacios: La Moneda y el de calle Nueva York, en Santiago, pero, además, las oficinas del conservador de Bienes Raíces de Rancagua y la sede edilicia de una importante comuna de la región del Maule.
Las muertes arrancan en el primer capítulo, con el asesinato del joven político, descendiente de una familia poderosa, que sacude sin anestesia al lector. El suspenso se hilvanará en un torrente de páginas que transcurren en medio de la tensión, hasta que, recién a partir del capítulo 16, se desencadenan las nuevas muertes, cada cual más escabrosa.
