En estas vacaciones, les presento un panorama que mezcla cultura y entretención en forma perfecta. Ubicado en el Parque Quinta Normal (Santiago) se encuentra el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, al que es posible llegar muy fácil por metro (Línea 5, estación Quinta Normal). La entrada es gratuita, y está abierto de 10 a 17:30 hrs. de martes a sábado.
En 1991, el edificio del museo fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en reconocimiento de su arquitectura y valor histórico, por lo que sólo contemplar sus líneas y formas con más de 190 años, hacen que la visita valga la pena.
Al ingresar al museo, mis pequeños acompañantes levantaron sus cabezas y se quedaron mirando dos esqueletos, uno mencionó que él creía que se trataban de algún tipo de plesiosauro y el otro, una especie de liopleurodon por su tamaño, y con mis ganas de mirar todo el lugar, olvidé revisar qué esqueletos eran y corroborar los datos de mi informante. Una vez logré que dejaran de mirarlos, seguimos recorriendo las salas disponibles en el primer piso del museo y sus interesantes exposiciones. Me llamaron la atención dos salas de trabajo cuyas paredes y puerta eran de vidrio, donde se pueden ver investigadores analizando muestras o escribiendo, que trajeron a mi mente el recuerdo del experimento social de fines de los 90, la casa de vidrio. Probablemente, las personas que se encontraban ese día en estas salas están acostumbradas a este sistema del museo que muestra en vivo el trabajo que realizan, pero no por eso dejé de sentirme una intrusa curiosa que desde fuera del vidrio escudriñaba parte de sus vidas laborales y su investigación.
Seguimos adelante y nos encontramos con una réplica del Niño del Cerro El Plomo, que corresponde al cuerpo de un niño indígena de 8 años, perteneciente a la cultura inca, que fue hallado por dos arrieros, congelado, con sus ofrendas y vestimenta especial para el dios sol, en la cumbre del cerro El Plomo, a 5400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, al frente de Santiago. Para preservar adecuadamente el cuerpo, este se encuentra en una vitrina especial refrigerada y es una de las piezas más valiosas del museo.
El recorrido nos permite apreciar que el museo esta lleno de piezas y réplicas interesantes: animales de Chile, restos y vestigios indígenas como flechas, utensilios, joyas e incluso canoas, una sala dedicada a animales marinos con una pantalla y sonidos que hacen imposible que una no se detenga por varios minutos a contemplar y disfrutar el lugar.
En la sala central, nos encontramos con la impresionante Greta, nombre de un esqueleto de ballena Sei (Balaenoptera borealis), que lleva este nombre en honor de la antropóloga Dra. Grete Mostny, primera directora mujer del museo, quien ejerció su labor por 40 años. El esqueleto impresiona por su tamaño, y si van y se preguntan qué pasó con su cola, no es que alguien se la haya llevado de “recuerdo”, sino que la cola de las ballenas no es de hueso, sino de cartílago.
Además de las salas con las exposiciones, este verano pueden encontrar tres actividades: el gabinete curioso, una vitrina con un objeto destacado y la exposición 100 años de admiración por los insectos. El gabinete curioso presenta distintas piezas del museo como algunos animales de Chile, cetáceos en miniatura, huesos, cráneos de animales, vestigios de la cultura chinchorro, la cual posee las momias más antiguas del mundo (sí, incluso más antiguas que las egipcias), momias que se encontraron en territorio nacional. Lo bueno, es que hay personas expertas para resolver todas las dudas que tengamos, además de entregar valiosa información.
Por otra parte, en la vitrina con un objeto destacado encontrarán un sarcófago egipcio que, de acuerdo con los jeroglíficos descifrados por la antes mencionada Dra. Grete Mostny, correspondería a una mujer llamada Heri-wedjat. El sarcófago de madera tiene tallado diferentes dioses egipcios. Al interior del sarcófago de madera se puede encontrar uno de cartón, y dentro de este, la momia con sus típicas vendas.
Finalmente, la exposición 100 años de admiración por los insectos es en honor de la Sociedad Chilena de Entomología, que cumplió 100 años y cuya sede oficial y biblioteca están en el área de entomología del mismo museo. Se pueden ver distintas colecciones de insectos donde se aprecia la diversidad en tamaño y forma: mariposas, palotes, escarabajos, dípteros, libélulas son algunas de las especies que se pueden encontrar y que provienen no solo de Chile, sino de diferentes partes del mundo. De Chile, se destacan por ejemplo las arañas pollitos, tarántulas grandes cubiertas de pelo y que actualmente se encuentran protegidas por ley. También, están los escorpiones o alacranes chilenos, que se caracterizan por un aguijón venenoso y que al igual que las arañas pollito son arácnidos. En Chile, los alacranes se encuentran en zonas áridas y semiáridas, y no hay una sola especie, de hecho, se pueden encontrar 55 especies diferentes en el país. La mayoría de las cuales son endémicas, es decir, se encuentran solo en Chile. Si hablamos de biodiversidad de insectos de Chile, esta también se ha visto afectada por la crisis climática, y por la introducción de especies de otros lugares.
No queda más que recomendarles este museo por si aún no lo conocen. Si ya han ido antes, vuelvan a visitarlo ya que hay renovación de las exposiciones temporales cada dos meses. Traten de ir acompañados con alguien que aún no lo conoce; es un entretenido panorama para todos los rangos de edad, que deja con ansias de seguir aprendiendo y descubriendo.
