Rancagua, pese a ser una urbe provinciana: “un puerto sin mar y sin orillas, junto a una montaña de cobre, lugar de paso adonde los hombres llegan, viven un tiempo en cualquier forma y luego se van” siempre se las ha arreglado para estar presente en la historia. Aquí se produjo un capítulo importante en la disputa por la emancipación nacional. Por aquí pasó Darwin, en su viaje en el Beagle, rumbo a las termas de Cauquenes, alojando una noche en la ciudad; por aquí pasó el mariscal de Gaulle – “la Francia soy yo” – para conmemorar el sesquicentenario de la batalla de Rancagua en el gobierno de Frei Montalva, celebración por la cual el presidente le enviaría una nota de felicitaciones al entonces alcalde Nicolás Díaz, que atesoró en un lugar central de su casa hasta su muerte; Rancagua fue una de las sedes de un mundial de fútbol; Allende celebró “la segunda independencia de Chile – la nacionalización del cobre en plaza de los Héroes -, y aquí surgió el movimiento sindical que encabezó Rodolfo Seguel, que culminaría cinco años más tarde con Pinochet derrotado en las urnas. Por aquí pasó, también, a inicios de nuestra transición, un joven dirigente sindical con dos dedos menos en sus manos, que acaba de ser electo por tercera vez presidente de Brasil. Nos referimos a Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. El siguiente es el relato y los pormenores de esa corta visita a la capital regional.
El contexto
La Juventud Socialista realizaba su pleno nacional en la capital regional y con la escenografía de fondo de la celebración del 248° aniversario de la fundación de la ciudad. Clave para que el evento se desarrollase en Rancagua fue la participación del entonces director regional del Instituto Nacional de la Juventud, Luis Pérez – conocido en la clandestinidad en Santiago, como Martín y en Talca como “el chico Ernesto”, siempre acompañado por su infaltable cajetilla de cigarrillos Hilton – por entonces, miembro de la comisión política de la organización y cercano al equipo que dirigía la Juventud Socialista (JS) y que lideraba Jaime Fuentealba, el querido Fischer, por su habilidad para el ajedrez.
Los convocados comenzaron a llegar el viernes 4 por la tarde y el sábado 5 de octubre se efectuó el pleno. Tempranamente por la mañana comenzó a circular la versión de que se haría presente, en el acto en el viejo sindicato Sewell y Mina, Lula, exdirigente sindical de la industria metalúrgica al mando de un nuevo referente político, el Partido de los Trabajadores (PT), que ya se empezaba a transformar en un referente para la izquierda latinoamericana posdictadura.
Sobre su presencia en la ciudad hay dos versiones: la primera que habría sido traído por una parte de la directiva socialista, que presidía por entonces Jorge Arrate y, dado que ni Aylwin ni Lagos lo quisieron recibir – a excepción del hombre de buen olfato político como lo era Enrique Correa –, fue enviado al evento de una masiva juventud con mucha presencia organizativa. Las gestiones se habrían desarrollado a través de uno de los hombres de confianza de Lula, Marco Aurelio Garcia, quien vivió parte de su exilio en el Chile de Allende. En la Facultad de Economía conoció a personajes como Carlos Ominami y luego, en el exilio en Francia, fue un activo militante del MIR, donde tuvo un acercamiento con Gonzalo Martner. No fue casual que ese día, el entonces subsecretario de desarrollo regional de Aylwin, muy casual, llegase al Sewell y Mina acompañado por viejos ex compañeros de ruta a escuchar a Lula, provenientes de Las Cabras, donde se encontraban en casa de uno de ellos, Milton Lee, en un encuentro de viejos amigos.
La segunda versión de la presencia de Lula ese día en Rancagua, que puede ser complementaria a la anterior, proviene de Lucho Pérez, quien indicó que las gestiones las hizo la propia directiva de la JS, encabezada por Fischer, quienes enviaron un fax invitando al evento al excandidato presidencial, que, a su vez, aceptó la invitación y que, según la versión del ex director del INJ en la región, se vino directo desde el aeropuerto a Rancagua.
Creo que, entre las confabulaciones y acuerdos de pasillo, siempre paralelos al evento mismo, Lula habló por la tarde. Subió al escenario del viejo sindicato minero, testigo de tantos acontecimientos históricos y habló y se le escuchó, en un auditorio a medio llenar. Lula, por entonces tenía 45 años, poseía una empatía directa con el público y, mientras gesticulaba, sus expresiones, a quienes estábamos en primera fila, nos llamaba la atención su par de dedos cortados en sus manos, herencia de su paso como obrero metalúrgico.
El evento era bastante significativo para una generación que, acostumbrada a la clandestinidad, sinceraba ahora sus identidades y sus verdaderos rostros. Al concluir vino, ya al atardecer, la foto de rigor con una de las nuevas promesas de la izquierda latinoamericana. Cuando Lula fue electo presidente de Brasil por primera vez, en 2002, le relaté a medio mundo que había pasado por Rancagua a inicios de los 90, pero nadie me creyó hasta que Lucho Pérez me hizo llegar, algunos años atrás, la imagen que se dice es de autoría de Juan Azócar. De hecho, escribí hace unos años para El Mostrador una columna donde, por primera vez, se publicó la fotografía, aunque con un error: señalé que la imagen era de un pleno de 1993, pero tanto Jorge Arrate, como Gonzalo Martner y mi amigo Felipe Carvajal me hicieron ver que la foto es de 1991.
La imagen se tomó en la puerta de acceso al viejo sindicato. Al centro de la imagen está Lula, riendo, y en primera fila se distinguen Hernán Garcia, Niky Martínez, Mariana Arellano, Ada y Patricia Hoces, flanqueadas por “Chernobyl” y Mario Hueso García. En esa misma fila, en el margen izquierdo, se puede observar a Mauricio Bugueño y Álvaro Elizalde, aun con mucho cabello. Curiosamente, en la imagen captada, no aparece Fischer. Al lado de Lula están Lucho Pérez, el compañero Monsalve de Concepción y, más atrás, Gonzalo Berrios y el gran Gastón Rosales. Yo estoy en el ángulo superior derecho de la imagen y solo se me alcanza a ver una parte del rostro.
Luego de la partida de Lula, y ya casi por la noche, salimos a la plaza Los Héroes a participar del 248° aniversario de su fundación. Aún era alcalde designado Rodolfo Cortés, creo que nos topamos con Teo Valenzuela, quien ya era el hombre del PPD para la alcaldía de la ciudad, distribuimos condones y luego, al bar del negro Romero, La Carpa, a conversar y a hacer de día la noche. Ese fue el breve y único paso del presidente electo de Brasil por nuestra ciudad.
