Es importante alertar a nuestros vecinos y autoridades locales de la escabrosa historia asociada al nombre del monseñor español Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, fundador del Opus Dei, quien por ello no merece, de ningún modo, tener una calle en ninguna parte del mundo con su nombre.

Cualquier machalino sabe de los tacos que se forman frente al cementerio Parque del Recuerdo en la angosta calle Escrivá de Balaguer. Lo que los vecinos, tal vez, no sepan es el origen de este peculiar nombre. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer fue un monseñor católico español, fundador del Opus Dei. Sí, el mismo Opus Dei al que perteneció Jaime Guzmán y varios personeros de la UDI. Recordemos que tuvimos por un buen tiempo a un alcalde machalino de ese partido político que habrá visto con mucha alegría y satisfacción el nombre de la calle. Es difícil creer que no hubiese algún personaje local que mereciera llevar el nombre de una calle importante de Machalí. Lo impresentable de tener el nombre de Escrivá de Balaguer es todo lo negativo que hay detrás de ese nombre. Algún católico devoto se preguntará cuál es la objeción si el caballero era un santo. Efectivamente, fue canonizado al cumplirse 100 años de su natalicio (2002), pero no sin cuestionamientos por la rapidez del proceso y los dos milagros que no fueron sin controversia. La supuesta santidad de Escrivá de Balaguer no tiene que ver con la estela de escándalos que enlodan su nombre y a la institución que fundó: el Opus Dei.
Partamos con la historia de España. Escrivá de Balaguer tenía un estrecho lazo con el dictador Francisco Franco. El Opus Dei aumentó su poder en España durante los casi 40 años de dictadura (1939-1975) y varios de sus miembros fueron ministros de Franco. Esto fue a tal punto que, en un momento, de los 19 ministros 12 eran miembros o simpatizantes del Opus Dei. No olvidemos que la dictadura de Franco fue una de las más horribles que haya producido la historia de Europa, con miles de desaparecidos (aún no encontrados), exiliados, torturados y exonerados. La mayor parte de la Iglesia católica española fue acérrima defensora del franquismo y el Opus Dei un gran aliado. Ya eso es suficiente para que Escrivá de Balaguer sea un nombre indeseado para una calle en nuestra comuna. Pero eso es solo la punta del iceberg.
Entre las múltiples controversias, una de las más graves es la justificación que hizo Escrivá de Balaguer del Holocausto. En 1992 salió a la luz, justo antes de su beatificación, la justificación del genocidio judío. Según el exmiembro del Opus Dei, Vladimir Feltzman, y asesor del cardenal arzobispo de Westminster, Basil Hume: «Él me dijo que Hitler había sido injustamente acusado de matar a seis millones de judíos», lo que fue publicado por la revista estadounidense Newsweek. Feltzman, agregó que Escrivá le matizó, al decir: «En efecto, él sólo mató a cuatro millones». El ayudante del cardenal Hume, declaró al diario El País ese mismo año que Escrivá de Balaguer le dijo en una ocasión que Adolf Hitler: «no era tan malo como cree la gente». La conversación entre ambos tuvo lugar en un cine de Roma, en 1967 o 1968, durante el intermedio de una película bélica: «en la que los soldados alemanes eran los villanos; Escrivá hizo algunos comentarios positivos sobre Hitler y afirmó que no había causado la muerte a seis millones de judíos, calificando tal cifra de absoluta exageración» (https://elpais.com/diario/1992/01/08/sociedad/694825201_850215.html)
Estas denuncias no detuvieron la beatificación de Escrivá de Balaguer, pero sí nos indican una creencia absolutamente inmoral. El negacionismo del Holocausto es ilegal en Alemania y es condenable desde cualquier punto de vista.
Las denuncias contra el Opus Dei son múltiples y crecientes. En 2021, Lucía Giménez en Buenos Aires, Argentina, denunció la condición de servidumbre que vivió cuando apenas tenía 16 años. En su denuncia, señala que debía fregar pisos arrodillada por horas y que nunca recibió pago por su trabajo. Lucía entró a la orden a comienzos de los años 80 en Paraguay, su país de origen. Entró al Opus Dei con la promesa de cursar educación superior. Sin embargo, solo obtuvo instrucción en cocina, aseo y tareas domésticas para servir sin remuneración en los centros, residencias y casas de retiro de la Orden.
Los casos de abuso sexual han sido múltiples y en diferentes partes del mundo. En 2019, el Opus Dei tuvo que pagar casi un millón de dólares a una mujer en Nueva York por los abusos del sacerdote John McCloskey de la Orden, por «conducta sexual inapropiada».
En 2021, se concretó la primera condena por abusos sexuales asociadas al Opus Dei por parte del mismo Vaticano. Manuel Cociña Abella, cura numerario de la institución y, muy cercano a Escrivá de Balaguer, es el primer condenado por la Congregación para la Doctrina de Fe del Vaticano, por abusos sexuales. Roma lo condenó a 5 años sin poder ejercer como sacerdote y no podrá prestar atención religiosa a ningún menor de 30 años.
Manuel Cociña Abella, de 72 años, convivió con Escrivá de Balaguer y eran muy cercanos. Además, era parte de la jerarquía de la Orden. Eso por sí solo es muy grave y razón más que suficiente para no tener ninguna calle en el mundo con el nombre de un eclesiástico que fundó una Orden que estuvo en la cama con una sangrienta dictadura que violó derechos humanos por casi 40 años. Si a eso le sumamos esta condena a uno de los más cercanos de Escrivá de Balaguer, por abuso sexual, es más que suficiente para no tener un nombre manchado como una avenida principal de nuestra comuna.
Como residente de la comuna de Machalí, me parece importante visibilizar el problema que hay con el nombramiento de esta calle. En este país ya hemos avanzado al cambiar nombres de avenidas como lo era 11 de septiembre; ahora, Nueva Providencia. Creo que es importante alertar a nuestros vecinos y autoridades locales de esta escabrosa historia asociada al nombre del monseñor español que no merece, de ningún modo, tener una calle en ninguna parte del mundo con su nombre.
