Óscar vemos, calidad no sabemos

Hace pocos días nos hemos visto abofeteados en la alfombra roja sólo por haber dicho algo que, según el agresor, estaba fuera de lugar. ¡Escándalo dijeron!, ¡escándalo reclamamos todos! ¿Y cómo no, sí son nuestros Óscares, nuestra fiesta del cine?

No podemos desnudar a Óscar, que ya aparece desnudo y que fue bautizado con ese nombre por su histérico parecido con el tío de una actriz. Es, en palabras más sobrias, un premio al mérito, lo cual está bien. Es una mirada sobre una cierta calidad que, como tal, es indiscutible.

El problema que se nos presenta, es que su glamour y trascendencia hacen creer a todos que son las orientaciones históricas y estéticas del celuloide y de eso está lejos.

El criterio indiscutible para calificar una película es el tiempo, dos o tres años para que ese film madure entre nosotros y luego podemos hablar de una buena película, y si es mejor, seguirá creciendo hasta convertirse en una referencia, en un culto. Esto lo deciden los críticos y los aficionados al cine, es decir, los que ven la cinta y la vuelven a ver varias veces más. Con esa revisión se enriquece el comentario y al replicarlo, otras voces se van sumando para alcanzar en algún momento lo ya dicho, que se las reconozca y se conviertan en culto.

La idea de este texto es desmitificar al tío Óscar como indicador del mejor cine. Para ello es bueno revisar y creer en algunas de las encuestas que manifiestan cuáles son las mejores películas de la historia del cine.

El Óscar ha cumplido ininterrumpidamente 94 años de vida, es la premiación más antigua del mundo, lo cual reitero, no es garantía de selección del mejor cine. Aquí les dejo un breve listado de algunas películas premiadas y, que a mi entender, con el paso de los años se han ganado el lugar de las mejores.

Sin ánimo de querer polemizar, diré que el Óscar ha acertado en Sin novedad en el frente (Lewis Milestone, 1931), Casablanca (Michael Curtis, 1942), Contacto en Francia (William Friedkin, 1971), El Francotirador (Michael Cimino, 1978) y dentro de estos aciertos, sin duda no puedo dejar afuera a El Padrino (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). Hay unas pocas más, pero la idea que quede claro lo pobre que ha sido su selección de premios.

Como contrapartida, podría decir que el Óscar, como indicador de buen cine y considerando los muchos años que lleva premiando creaciones del 7° arte, no acertó en este otro listado (revisar con paciencia):

  • En 1957, sólo dos nominaciones, dirección artística y vestuario, fueron para Los Siete Samuráis (Akira Kurosawa), y ni siquiera estuvo nominada como mejor película, ese año ganó La vuelta al mundo en 80 días (Michael Anderson).
  • 12 hombres en furia (Sidney Lumet) fue nominada, pero ganó El puente sobre el Río Kwai (David Lean) en 1958.
  • En 1965, a pesar de que estuvieron nominadas, no ganaron ni Zorba el griego (Mihalis Kakogiannis), ni Teléfono Rojo (Stanley Kubrick).
  • En 1979, Apocalipse Now (Francis Ford Coppola), estuvo nominada, pero sólo obtuvo estatuillas en Fotografía y Sonido. Ganó Kramer versus Kramer (Robert Benton).
  • En 1980 ganó Gente Ordinaria (Robert Redford), por sobre Toro Salvaje (Martin Scorsese).
  • En 1991 ganó Danza con lobos (Kevin Kostner) y Buenos muchachos (Martin Scorsese); no.
  • Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino), en 1995, fue nominada, pero ganó Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis).
  • En 1997, Seven, o Los siete pecados capitales (David Fincher), no obtuvo ni siquiera una nominación. El Oscar se lo llevó Titanic (James Cameron).

Escribiendo este texto, revisando y ya viviendo en esta demencia senil, aparecen nombres y rostros, y uno curiosea y se sorprende, como por ejemplo con el actor Laurence Fishburne, sí, el mismo, el de Morfeo en Matrix. Lo llamativo es que actuó en Apocalipse Now, pero en esos tiempos era un chico muy delgado y difícil de reconocer. Lo otro, y haciendo esta tarea, se me apareció una película que me distrajo de mis deberes, y que recomiendo. Se puede encontrar en Youtube. Se trata d  Z (Costa Gavras, 1979).
