El 27 agosto de 1980, el ex presidente de la República Eduardo Frei Montalva, encabezó un acto en el Teatro Caupolicán de Santiago para rechazar la Constitución que proponía el dictador. Esa noche señaló: “Ese pueblo, antes que nadie se lo dijera, ya se decidió a votar que No, aunque sabe que no tendrá medios de control verdadero sobre los escrutinios. Por eso nadie se hace ilusiones sobre el resultado”. A ese acto, en un hecho que poco se conoce, asistieron y se sentaron en la primera fila José Piñera padre, y sus hijos Pablo y Sebastián. Como se sabe, la familia Piñera respaldó el golpe y su hijo Sebastián no solo lo justificó, sino que se hizo millonario bajo ese régimen.
Se sabe, porque el propio Aylwin lo comentó varias veces de manera jocosa: luego de haber dicho públicamente que votaría por el No, luego del plebiscito Sebastián le solicitó una entrevista al líder DC. El motivo de la reunión fue que el ya connotado empresario le pidió a quien sería el candidato presidencial de la Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia en 1989, un cupo como senador por la DC en la circunscripción de Santiago. La respuesta, en tono ameno del tradicional político fue “pues bien Sebastián, pero tiene que hacer la fila”, queriendo connotar con ello que la política era una carrera profesional y que había muchos aspirantes a ese puesto con más pergaminos. Como se sabe, y como fue una característica del hombre tanto en el mundo empresarial como en la política, Sebastián se saltó la fila.
Tatán no estaba acostumbrado a respetar las reglas del juego ni a seguir tradiciones como ya lo había explicitado con las tarjetas de crédito y con los sucesos del Banco de Talca que lo llevaron a ser declarado reo estando prófugo por casi un mes. Para conseguir lo que quería en el retorno a la democracia, pactó con Andrés Allamand, joven secretario general de Renovación Nacional (RN) y con Sergio Onofre Jarpa, líder de la derecha oligárquica tradicional, transformándose en el flamante y joven senador de una derecha más moderna. Como miembro permanente de la Comisión de Hacienda del Senado negoció la reforma tributaria con Alejandro Foxley y las del proceso de regionalización y descentralización que implementó el gobierno de Aylwin.
Siendo joven fue parte del clan conocido como los Piraña que encabezaba el empresario Fernando Larraín y luego Manuel Cruzat, quienes crecieron y se fortalecieron al alero del gobierno de Frei Montalva. Su adjetivación de “Piraña” venía del hecho de la voracidad con que operaban y crecían en la economía, bordeando siempre los límites y más allá de lo que la ley permitía, lo que llevó a Carlos Tromben en su libro Crónica secreta de la economía chilena a señalar que “el submarino amarillo de Manuel Cruzat es una embarcación surrealista cuyo combustible es el dinero ajeno”.
De allí provenía su espíritu audaz que lindaba siempre con “la pillería”. Los casos tarjetas de crédito, banco de Talca, Chispas, Exalmar, LAN -que le valió una multa de la Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros-, el caso Cascadas, minera Dominga, sus hijos en el viaje a China, son una larga lista de los excesos conocidos del empresario y político.
El hombre que redujo a la Concertación a ser minoría
Como era característico en su personalidad, Piñera ingresó agresivamente a la política y ya en 1992 se auto proponía como precandidato presidencial de la derecha. Siendo parte de la patrulla juvenil de RN que integraban entre otros, Allamand, Alberto Espina y Evelyn Matthei, se vio involucrado en el escándalo Piñeragate que lo llevó, al igual que a la actual alcaldesa de Providencia, a renunciar a ese desafío.
Luego, se transformó en el presidente de su colectividad, RN, y a la vez ingresó como accionista mayoritario del club de fútbol Colo Colo, siguiendo el ejemplo de Mauricio Macri con Boca. Pese a ser acérrimo hincha de Universidad Católica (UC), entendía que en su carrera política ser el líder del club de fútbol más popular del país era un requisito para llegar a La Moneda.
Su presidencia en RN, junto a su aspiración por ser senador por Valparaíso fue descabezada por quien, en su momento, se pensaba era casi seguro el próximo presidente de Chile, Joaquín Lavín.
Piñera nunca fue miembro de la oligarquía tradicional chilena, porque no era parte de esta. Su origen, al igual que la familia Cueto de la que fue socio en LAN, se remonta a orígenes humildes en Asturias, España. Ello, más su estilo individualista y agresivo, falto de austeridad, lo llevó a ser odiado por el empresariado tradicional y por la derecha centenaria que muy bien representaba la UDI. Y Piñera, lobo solitario, los volvió a desafiar. Contra todo pronóstico se presentó a la primera vuelta presidencial del 2005 y le sacó dos puntos de ventaja a Joaquín Lavín, enfrentándose a Michelle Bachelet en segunda vuelta. Como se sabe perdió, pero su figura quedó lista para en 2009, plantar cara a una Concertación ya envejecida, fracturada, falta de ideas, acosada por la corrupción y sin figuras de recambio.
En ese escenario Piñera puso de rodillas a la derecha tradicional diciéndoles “soy yo, o el caos”, ofreciéndose como la alternativa para alcanzar el poder, por su histórico vinculo democratacristiano, sin la necesidad de dar golpes de estado ni de llegar al poder por un golpe de fuerza.
El hombre entonces llevó a la Concertación desde el puesto de “más exitosa en la historia de Chile”, en el decir exagerado del expresidente Lagos, a ser minoría y su gobierno, denunciado por el propio Pablo Longueira, líder de la UDI, como “el quinto gobierno de la concertación”, avanzó en el aumento de la Pensión Garantizada Universal, el postnatal, el pacto unión civil, y enardeció a la derecha con su denuncia de los “cómplices pasivos” en 2013. No entregó Codelco al capital privado ni avanzó más en las privatizaciones que ya había hecho la Concertación. Fue un gobernante pragmático que luego, por los mismos motivos y por tener él la llave del candado que lo vinculaba con el centro político se repitió el plato, debiendo enfrentar el estallido social que, con todos sus excesos –11 muertos y medio millar de personas mutiladas en sus ojos – no llegó a hacer lo que la derecha tradicional habría hecho: disparar a quemarropa como lo hicieron tantas veces en la historia de Chile cuando debió enfrentar la protesta social.
Como me lo señalaba un amigo, cuando en 20 años más algún niñ@ en alguna escuela de Chile pregunte por el legado del presidente Piñera, nadie se acordará de nada excepto que fue el protagonista del estallido social y el presidente de la pandemia. Fue un presidente mediocre, no más que los que le antecedieron y lo relevaron, personalidades que, en el decir de Mirko Macari, han ido socavando, uno tras otro, la figura de la presidencia de la república y contribuyendo al escenario actual de crisis total de las instituciones republicanas.
Bajo este relato no resulta casual que antes de su muerte, no hubiese estado rodeado de ningún prohombre de la derecha. Solo su entorno familiar, Magdalena Piñera y un nieto suyo y dos hombres vinculados a la cultura política DC: José Cox y Bautista Guerrero.
Ha muerto Sebastián Píñera. A la derecha le costará encontrar un reemplazante similar ya que saben que con liderazgos al estilo Kast, estarán pasando frío mucho rato.
