Casi 50.000 seguidores en Twitter, 82.000 seguidores en Instagram, y 378.000 seguidores en Tik Tok convierten en la actualidad a Teresa Paneque Carreño en la influencer científica chilena más destacada. Nació en Madrid (España), hija de Paz Carreño, chilena y de Manuel Paneque, cubano, ambos científicos y doctores. La familia se reinstaló en Chile cuando Teresa tenía 9 años. Su familia más cercana está compuesta además por sus dos hermanos menores, quienes practican hockey desde muy pequeños; no sabemos si seguirán los pasos de su familia o sus sueños estén en otras áreas. Si hay algo que caracteriza a esta familia además de las ciencias y los deportes, es la gran cordialidad y amabilidad que siempre transmiten.
En esta entrevista conversamos con Teresa, astrónoma, magister en Astronomía de la Universidad de Chile, autora de la serie de libros El Universo según Carlota y comunicadora científica en redes sociales. Actualmente, nos contesta amablemente desde Alemania, donde está haciendo sus estudios de doctorado en Astronomía en el observatorio Europeo Austral (Alemania) y la Universidad de Leiden (Holanda); su área de especialización es la formación de planetas y, en particular, las condiciones químicas y la distribución de elementos químicos en los entornos de formación planetaria.
Conversamos de lo humano y lo divino con la astrónoma Teresa Paneque y a continuación les compartimos esta entrevista de El Regionalista.
Tu padre es cubano y tu madre chilena ¿marcó esa multiculturalidad tu personalidad o a lo que te dedicas hoy en día?
Yo creo que mis padres han sido claves en mi desarrollo personal. Mi familia, mis padres y mis dos hermanos, mi familia somos bastante unidas, somos un núcleo muy cercano y por ende están presentes en todo lo que hago, ellos y mis hermanos. Dicho eso, la multiculturalidad no pasa sólo por un tema de pasaportes, sino también por las experiencias que hemos podido vivir, residiendo en otros países y eso lo llevo conmigo. Creo que lo expreso mucho más en mi vocación social o mis visiones políticas en lo que concierne a los cambios posibles en un país como Chile. A la hora de elegir mi carrera, creo que lo que más me afectó positivamente fue la apertura tanto de mi mamá como de mi papá para que yo estudiara cualquier cosa y la ausencia de estereotipos o roles de género en mi casa. Tanto mi padre como mi madre hacen las tareas domésticas y ayudan en la crianza desde siempre.
Tus padres son del área de la química y doctores. ¿Qué te hace a ti dedicarte a un área distinta como lo es la astronomía?
Mi papá es bioquímico, mi mamá es químico farmacéutica, son líneas similares, pero no iguales. De todas maneras, ellos nunca me incentivaron o empujaron a que yo hiciera lo mismo que ellos. Es verdad que, de pequeña, sobre todo, porque no había quien me cuidase, pasaba mucho tiempo en el laboratorio, pero no estaba haciendo experimentos. Creo que lo que me ayudó fue ver el camino científico como una ruta válida de formación y de trabajo. Hay muchas personas hoy en día que no saben qué hace una científica o científico y yo tengo la suerte de convivir con dos, y entendía muy bien cuáles eran las opciones, cuáles eran las condiciones de la academia, los horarios, los compromisos. De una u otra manera, igualmente llegué a la química estudiando astronomía. Estudiando en escalas mucho más grandes con técnicas muy distintas a las que se emplean en un laboratorio, logré llegar a analizar la química de los entornos de formación planetaria y eso fue algo que se dio naturalmente y lo encuentro muy bonito.
Hace relativamente poco viajaste a Alemania para hacer tu doctorado ¿en que área lo estás haciendo? ¿Tienes ya decidido el tema de tu tesis?
Estoy ahora en mi segundo año de doctorado, llevo un año y medio viviendo fuera del país y yo llegué sabiendo que quería estudiar el gas en los entornos de formación planetaria, que me interesaba saber las perturbaciones dinámicas y las abundancias químicas que hay en torno a estas estrellas jóvenes. Y en particular, me interesa ver la distribución, en el fondo poder ocupar moléculas químicas como trazadores de las condiciones del disco. La química está muy atada a condiciones de temperatura y densidad y, por ende, a través del estudio y la observación de distintas moléculas y de distintas transiciones, podemos decir algo respecto de cuáles son las condiciones de temperatura o densidad en los momentos de formación de planetas y eso es algo muy interesante. Con instrumentos como ALMA, el radiotelescopio del norte de Chile, podemos ver en detalle cada vez más.
¿En Alemania, en qué ciudad estás y qué es lo que más te ha llamado la atención de ella?
Yo estoy basada en Munich, que es una ciudad principal en la región de Bavaria, al sur de Alemania, muy cerca de la frontera con Austria e Italia. Lo que más me ha llamado la atención ha sido la multiculturalidad, o sea, aquí hay personas de todos los países, es una ciudad muy universitaria por lo que llegan estudiantes de distintas partes de Europa y se hablan prácticamente todos los idiomas. En ese sentido, no saber alemán no es un problema y me puedo manejar con el inglés, aun cuando estoy tratando de aprender el idioma (ríe). Siendo muy honesta lo primero que me llamó mucho la atención ha sido el transporte público, la frecuencia de los metros que es muy distinta, o sea, a veces uno tiene que esperar 20 minutos para que pase un metro dependiendo del horario en el que una lo esté tomando o en la dirección en la que uno quiera ir y tienen escaleras mecánicas que van en los dos sentidos según como la gente se acerca. También (las calles) tienen una iluminación muy particular que hace que las noches sean muy oscuras y que incluso en la ciudad se vean las estrellas, y eso lo encuentro muy bonito. Esas son cosas más del día a día que me han llamado la atención.
¿Cómo conjugas tus estudios de doctorado con la comunicación científica que realizas?
El doctorado es mi actividad principal que es lo que realizo durante el día en horario laboral. En general, todas las actividades de divulgación las hago por la tarde aquí, haciendo uso de la diferencia horaria, en Alemania siempre es más tarde que en Chile, que es cuando hago principalmente las actividades. Entonces, cuando es mediodía en Chile, en Alemania pueden ser las 4, las 6 de la tarde y en ese momento me conecto o hago videos o reviso lo que tengo que hacer en las redes.
¿Cómo surge el libro “El Universo según Carlota”? ¿En quién pensabas mientras lo escribías?
El Universo según Carlota fue algo que surgió a partir de una propuesta que me hizo Editorial Planeta de si me interesa escribir algún libro. Yo de pequeña era una gran lectora, actualmente lo hago cuando los tiempos me lo permiten y entonces sabía que mi visión de un libro tenía que ser una historia que fuese interesante y apta incluso para niños y niñas que no estuviesen, en un inicio, interesados en la astronomía, y es por eso que Carlota cuenta la historia y las interacciones que tiene la protagonista con sus amigas, con su familia, con las personas que la rodean, de paso ella va aprendiendo de astronomía, pero la ciencia es un pretexto y un agregado a la historia del libro, a la narrativa. Y en verdad pensé mucho en las personas que a mí me inspiraron, Carlota no es autobiográfica, pero si tiene muchos componentes que han sido importantes en mi historia, mi familia, mis amigas, mis profesoras.
¿Dentro de tus proyectos se viene otra aventura para Carlota?
Bueno, la segunda parte de Carlota está a la venta en marzo en físico a lo largo de todas las librerías del país. Después de esto, no sé si venga una tercera parte. Para contextualizar un poco, la primera fue de asteroides y estrellas fugaces, ahora esta segunda entrega es sobre agujeros negros y explosiones estelares. Niños y niñas, lectores y lectoras en general, van a poder aprender sobre qué son los agujeros negros, cómo los detectamos, los distintos tipos de agujeros negros, las distorsiones que producen, los efectos de los agujeros negros y también sobre los ciclos de vida de las estrellas y cómo las estrellas también están ligadas con los agujeros negros, que son dos tópicos muy interesantes que siempre me preguntan en mis actividades, charlas o videos en redes sociales. Una tercera edición sería maravillosa, hay que esperar a ver, no tengo confirmación de aquello, pero de todas maneras existe la voluntad y el deseo de que pueda seguir entregando historias de Carlota, al menos por un poquito más.
En la última campaña presidencial apoyaste públicamente al presidente electo Gabriel Boric. ¿Por qué te decidiste a hacerlo?
Creo que es importante que, desde el mundo de las ciencias, nos incluyamos en las decisiones políticas del país. Primero porque somos ciudadanos y ciudadanas por ende, a nosotros también nos impacta quien esté gobernando, y porque la actividad científica no es para nada apolítica. Los resultados científicos se tratan de verdades, pero para quiénes hacen ciencia, las condiciones en las cuales se realiza, los proyectos que se decide financiar son decisiones absolutamente políticas y hoy en día estamos en un punto de quiebre a nivel mundial. Nos enfrentamos a desafíos, crisis climática, social, política y por ende a mí me importa muchísimo que el gobierno de un país como Chile, que va a ser uno de los países más fuertemente afectados por el cambio climático, tenga una visión científica, que tenga un ideal de cómo debe promoverse la educación, la tecnología y que tenga un fuerte componente medioambiental. Es el caso del programa de gobierno de Gabriel que a mí me inspira y él es una persona a quien yo admiro desde el 2011, la época del movimiento estudiantil cuando yo estaba en el colegio, así que la verdad es que ha sido algo muy natural para mí, se alinea mucho con mi visión política apoyarlo durante su campaña de cualquier forma posible, de la manera que más pudiese aportar como independiente (yo no milito en ningún partido), principalmente a través de la campaña en redes.
Hace poco, en twitter, hubo un intercambio con una astróloga ¿qué piensas de las pseudociencias? ¿se pueden colocar las creencias al mismo nivel que el conocimiento científico, por ejemplo?
Yo creo que la astrología es un área de las pseudociencias que, a nivel personal y como creencia o actividad personal, para el autoconocimiento, es maravillosa y yo creo que nadie le puede dictar a cualquier persona en qué creer o cómo emplear su tiempo. Toda la discusión en torno a las redes sociales que se dio a inicios del año, recae en mi crítica a que en medios masivos de comunicación, lugares donde la gente busca informarse, astrólogas o astrólogos aparecen como fuentes de información y como herramientas para la toma de decisiones en temas tan críticos para la población como la salud o la inversión. Yo creo que eso es una falta de respeto y una irresponsabilidad muy grande, considerando la tremenda audiencia que tienen estas plataformas y es ahí donde apunta mi critica: cuando se ocupan estas herramientas para toma de decisiones.
