Está el dicho de que “las segundas partes nunca fueron buenas”, pero no siempre es tan así. Por estos días se estrenó la secuela de una película que tiene casi cuarenta años: Top Gun. Sin duda, el cálculo comercial era apostar por la nostalgia de los que vimos la original en nuestra adolescencia y que ya tenemos hijos de esa edad o mayores. Mis expectativas eran bastante bajas, pero el filme me sorprendió bastante. Al punto, que me atrevo a decir que la segunda parte superó al original.
Hay que pensar que las expectativas hace 36 años eran bastante diferentes. Los efectos especiales no eran nada respecto a lo que vemos hoy, y el sexismo era pan de todos los días. La idea del macho alfa era lo normal y existía un romanticismo en exceso en relación a hombres uniformados. Hoy, afortunadamente, todo eso ha quedado bastante en el pasado. Ese es el primer acierto de la película: saber leer los tiempos. Si bien Maverick continúa siendo el rompecorazones del original, ya no tiene el mismo juego machista del “boy meets girl”. De partida, el interés romántico en la cinta es una mujer independiente, dueña de su propio negocio, que no necesita un macho que la rescate. Además, la elección de una actriz consagrada y de gran calidad, como lo es Jennifer Connelly, fue un gran acierto.
Jennifer Connelly 
Un segundo elemento, que es un reflejo de los tiempos, es la diversidad de los protagonistas. El grupo de aviadores de elite está compuesto por afroamericanos, latinos y una mujer. Esto muestra la realidad de la fuerza aérea norteamericana de hoy. De seguro, un factor que desagradará a los votantes de Trump, que fueron fans de la película original.
Un tercer punto a favor de la cinta es la conexión y coherencia con la historia de hace 36 años. La inclusión de Val Kilmer y Ed Harris fue un acierto. Más aún que hayan incorporado la enfermedad real de Kilmer a la trama (el actor padece de cáncer a la garganta). En términos de ausencias, me parece un desacierto no explicar qué pasó con el personaje de Kelly McGillis. La actriz ha declarado que no la llamaron a participar porque ella ha envejecido de modo normal, como cualquier mujer por sobre los 60. El hecho de que Tom Cruise no tenga espacio en su cara para más estiramientos no es un parámetro real para ningún hombre de su edad, tampoco lo es su físico de gimnasio. Por otro lado, se gana la vida con su imagen, y eso es lo que vale para Hollywood. Cruise no es un actor con demasiado rango, pero se desenvuelve bien en este papel y no decepciona a sus fans al reanimar a Maverick después de tantos años.
Un cuarto punto a destacar es la música. El matrimonio artístico-creativo del destacadísimo John Williams con la brillante Lady Gaga nos brinda una banda sonora tan buena o mejor que la de la versión ochentera. El tema principal, Danger Zone, continúa reinando en la secuela, pero el tema nuevo escrito y cantado por Lady Gaga es muy bueno, como todo lo que hace esta artista.
El quinto elemento que quiero realzar es que los efectos especiales y de sonido fueron realizados por Skywalker Sound de George Lucas. Para cualquier fan de la saga Star Wars es fácil identificar la mano de los sonidistas y la coreografia realizada por los aviones. Sin duda, recuerdan a las secuencias de la serie de Lucas. El parecido entre estas escenas y las de la secuela de Top Gun son evidentes. Entre Mark Hamill u Oscar Isaac piloteando un X-wing o Cruise al mando de un F18 o un F14 las diferencias son solo en el planeta o el set en que fueron realizadas.
Otro punto a considerar en la saga es el timing perfecto. Ni los realizadores, ni Cruise podrían haber anticipado el tenso estado de guerra fría en el que se encontraría el mundo al momento del estreno del filme. La guerra en Ucrania ha reavivado las tensiones y Putin se ha encargado de poner al mundo en alerta frente a un posible ataque nuclear. En el 86, la Guerra Fría original estaba en sus últimos años de vida, pero en ese momento nadie lo sabía. La confrontación entre pilotos de la desaparecida URSS y los EE.UU. era una trama natural a los tiempos que se vivían. Hoy, nuevamente, nos enfrentamos a grandes tensiones entre Rusia y occidente. La secuela aprovecha bien la coyuntura y nos presenta una trama en la cual una nación sin nombre ha logrado enriquecer uranio de modo ilegal, y el equipo de Top Gun debe destruir la base en una misión sacada de un episodio de la serie Misión imposible, también llevada al cine de la mano de Cruise. Es indudable que Rusia estaba en la mente de los creadores al filmar en un paisaje canadiense que podría ser Siberia. Tampoco pasa inadvertido el casco y ropa negra de los antagonistas, que fácilmente recuerdan al First Order de Star Wars. Esos son los detalles en el cine que no se escapan de las manos de los realizadores y tampoco de los espectadores con cultura cinematográfica. Como en la buena literatura, los guiños al interlocutor son siempre bienvenidos por los que leemos/vemos un buen libro/película.
Un último elemento que me gustaría destacar es que la construcción de los personajes de la secuela supera a la original. Si bien en la versión de los 80 está el compañerismo del grupo de aviadores, está la relación amorosa del protagonista con la psicóloga, la amistad entre Goose y Maverick, los personajes no están desarrollados del modo que lo están en la secuela. En la nueva película hay un desarrollo mayor en la relación que tiene Maverick con Rooster, el hijo del fallecido Goose. Ese es el centro de la trama y las acciones de los personajes se explican dentro de la lógica de esa relación.
En este filme, su protagonista debe enfrentar sus miedos al decidir si deja que Rooster participe en la peligrosísima misión. Esa exploración emocional del protagonista le da una dimensión mucho más interesante que en la versión original. Si bien en ella debe enfrentarse a la muerte de su copiloto y amigo, en esta debe encarar el dolor de esa pérdida y la protección del hijo de su amigo. En ese sentido, Maverick se convierte en un personaje mucho más de carne y hueso, incluso si sus hazañas siguen siendo igualmente heroicas e irreales como las de hace 36 años.
Algo similar ocurre con la relación amorosa de Maverick. En la original hay una fogosa relación con escena de sexo incluida. El que espera lo mismo de la secuela, tendrá una gran decepción. Jennifer Connelly no muestra ni el tobillo. Lo que aparece en pantalla es una relación que se condice mucho más con personas maduras que saben lo que quieren. Aunque se repite la idea de la mujer que aconseja al héroe de la historia, como he señalado, es una mujer que no necesita de un hombre que la rescate, pero sí está dispuesta a tener una relación sin ataduras ni nombres. En ese aspecto, también se reflejan los tiempos: incluso en un contexto de machos alfa, aparece una mujer independiente y empoderada que toma sus propias decisiones, es asertiva y no depende de nadie.
En tiempos de pandemia muchos nos acostumbramos a ver películas por streaming. De hecho, debo confesar que no veía una película en el cine desde hace dos años. Tom Cruise insistió que su película no se estrenaría por ninguna plataforma. Tal como su personaje, hay una parte del pasado que no quiere dejar ir. Las salas de cine están languideciendo con los efectos de la pandemia. Veremos si estrenos como este pueden revivir a la industria. Ver una película en la casa es cómodo, pero en una película con efectos de sonido y visuales como esta, no es lo mismo. Chile es uno de los pocos países en el mundo que tienen el tipo de restricciones que a uno le asegura que todos los asistentes están vacunados con esquema completo. Así que use su pase de movilidad y aproveche de ir al cine en las mejores condiciones posibles. Esta película no lo va a decepcionar.
