Desde mi particular óptica, fue el mejor futbolista de su tiempo. Si bien tuvo una infancia difícil –su padre falleció cuando Cruyff tenía apenas doce años, obligándolo a trabajar en el Ajax para ayudar a su mamá- no culminó su vida con escándalos y drogas al estilo Maradona, ni se transformó en un divo del jet set a lo Pelé. Vivió en un país pequeño, Países Bajos, donde no existía una hinchada fanatizada por el futbol como opción para evadirse de la miseria que los rodeaba, como sí sucedía en Brasil o Argentina.
Fue siempre fiel a su estilo: de hablar directo, sin rodeos y de defender siempre a sus compañeros ante el abuso permanente de los dirigentes. Juan Carlos Heredia, amigo inseparable en el Barça lo recuerda así: “era un fenómeno, tenía una humildad y sencillez únicas. Tenía claro quién era y se peleaba con los dirigentes para defender a sus compañeros”.
Después de su éxito con el Ajax, tres veces campeón consecutivo de la Champions, y previo al mundial de fútbol de 1974, cuando se empezaba ya hablar de la Naranja Mecánica, lo quiso fichar el Real Madrid por una suma estratosférica, pero Cruyff, idéntico a sus convicciones, partió al Barça. Todos quienes somos sobrevivientes de ese mundial nos acordamos de ese equipo estelar que sorprendió a moros y cristianos con su “fútbol total”, pasando a cuartos de final como vencedores e invictos, transformándose en la niña mimada de periodistas y fanaticada por su concepción futbolística con jugadores corriendo por todas partes de la cancha. Todavía está la imagen del partido contra Uruguay en que su defensa viene saliendo y es atacada por siete jugadores tulipanes hasta robarle el balón, al punto que los dueños de casa, la Alemania Federal (RFA), luego de vencer a Chile y Australia en primera ronda, se dejaron perder con la Alemania democrática (RDA) con un fútbol muy inferior para no toparse de inmediato en segunda vuelta con el equipo de Cruyff.
En cuartos de final – el grupo de la muerte junto a Argentina, Brasil y RDA –, golearon a Argentina 4-0, y Cruyff dio un espectáculo personal, al punto que Roberto Perfumo resumió de esta manera ese partido: “Holanda nos golpeó durante todo el partido. Es como si fuese un boxeador que castiga a otro, lo noquea y lo vuelve a golpear cuando apenas se incorporó. No nos dejaron levantarnos nunca. Sentimos impotencia”, y agrega: “en un momento dado, hay un saque de arco y veo que Daniel (Carnevalli) va caminando, cuando ya íbamos perdiendo. Entonces le digo, Dale Daniel sacá y él me responde ‘Pará, qué querés, si perdimos la pelota muy rápido”. Perfumo confesará que: “como nunca quise que un partido terminara tan luego”. El gran Quique Wolff, jugador de la albiceleste de ese mundial y hoy comentarista deportivo de ESPN, sintetizó así al fenómeno holandés: “Nunca vi nada igual. No hay como frenarlos. Atacan con 7 y defienden con los 11. Te matan marcando y cuando la tienen, se desmarcan todos. Siempre nos superaron numéricamente, en toda la cancha”.
Si alguien quiere saber qué significó como concepto el fútbol total holandés, le recomendaría revisar la participación de Holanda en ese mundial, y en especial el partido ante Argentina. Brasil, el entonces campeón mundial, sin Pelé, pero con una serie de figuras sobrevivientes del México 70’, sucumbió también luego a la Holanda de Cruyff con una actuación sobresaliente del Tulipán de Oro, quien regaló un gol notable que quedó en los anales del fútbol. Llegaron a la final como los favoritos por fútbol, y al minuto de juego, luego de jugar el balón 14 veces sin que ningún alemán hubiese tocado la pelota, Uwe Seeler le comete penal a Cruyff, lo que llevó al experimentado defensor germano a preguntarse luego: “si los holandeses tenían un pacto con el diablo”.
Holanda, finalmente, perdió ante Alemania 2-1, pero pasó a la historia y hoy casi nadie, a excepción del “bombardero” Gerd Müller y Beckenbauer, recuerda al equipo campeón. Pero hoy, casi 50 años después todos se acuerdan de la Naranja Mecánica y la revolución del fútbol.
Tenía apenas 7 años y vi esa final con mucha pena, tal cual como ocurriría cuatro años más tarde en que volvería a ver perder una final allende los andes, al seleccionado holandés, ya sin Cruyff, y con un Rensenbrik que en el minuto 90 estrella el balón en el poste lateral del meta Fillol.
Ya no estaba “el maestro”, quien por diversos motivos – censura a la dictadura argentina, miedo a un nuevo secuestro de su familia y solidaridad con su colega del Barça Juan Carlos Heredia, cuya familia había sido secuestrada por esbirros del régimen – nos privó de gozar de su talento, en un mundial en que también estuvo ausente Chile, en dictadura, eliminado por el Perú que haría escándalo en el mundial trasandino.
Lo vimos reaparecer, luego, conduciendo el Dream Team catalán que ganaría su primera Champions League en colores en 1992, y que dominaría la liga española por tres años consecutivos, mientras Megacomenzaba a transmitir los partidos del Madrid, y los chilenos sufrían con el equipo de Zamorano que siempre llegaba segundo.
Murió hace seis años, un 24 de marzo de 2016, acosado por un cáncer provocado por el cigarrillo. Miguel Ángel Brindisi, otro ídolo albiceleste del mundial germano resumió de esta manera la figura de la Holanda Errante de 1974 y de su rey sin corona: “Los primeros 10 minutos, Cruyff jugó en posición de 8. Después se fue de wing izquierdo. Al rato, era marcador de punta de ese lado. Después, estuvo de back derecho. Durante el segundo tiempo, se tiró de wing izquierdo. Y cuando Perfumo pateó ese tiro libre y volteó a uno, todos salieron a hacer la jugada del offside, y Cruyff fue el único que se dio cuenta que había uno caído habilitando y bajó para hacer de líbero”. El meta argentino de ese mundial, Daniel Carnevallí recordará así a la Holanda de Cruyff: “son una barbaridad. Los veías desde el arco y no podía creer que fuéramos once contra once. Ellos parecían como veinte”. El gran Roberto Perfumo del inolvidable Racing dirá, luego: “En el entretiempo me dijeron: ‘Sálgale al que viene con la pelota’. Y yo tenía ganas de preguntar: ¿A cuál de los cinco? Porque no venían de a uno…Pienso que han inventado un fútbol nuevo y desde hoy se deberá decir: antes de Holanda y después de Holanda”. Y, efectivamente, fue así. El fútbol mundial se revolucionó, todos quisieron jugar como Holanda, incluso hubo un club en Chile nacido allí por 1977, Cobreloa, que como indumentaria llevaba los mismos colores de la naranja mecánica y repetían a nivel local su estilo de juego de manera muy exitosa.
El hipotético triunfo de Holanda en 1974, así como el de 1978, o el Brasil de 1982, habrían llevado al balompié por caminos más exitosos y de más espectáculo. Por desgracia en 1974, 1978 y 1982, se impuso un triunfador que ponía énfasis en lo defensivo y en argucias extradeportivas para ganar campeonatos.
Cruyff como jugador, como director técnico y como personalidad dejó una huella imborrable entre quienes somos hinchas de este masivo y popular deporte, y nos entregó frases para la posteridad como las siguientes: “Mis delanteros solo deben correr 15 metros, a no ser que sean estúpidos o estén durmiendo”; “Prefiero ganar por 5-4 que 1-0” o esta última: “No soy creyente. En España, todos los jugadores se santiguan antes de salir al campo. Si resultara, siempre sería empate”.
