Gracias al evento hubo un salto en infraestructura, y el fútbol que se jugó fue el esperado por los organizadores. Ninguno de los equipos que estuvieron en nuestra región llegaron a la final. Sin embargo, el Mundial fue para Rancagua una excelente vitrina para mostrarse a occidente. Es el primer evento del que participa Chile en un mundo que va camino a la globalización.

Se cuenta que, cuando Patricio Mekis se obsesionó con la idea de traer el mundial a Rancagua y parte de la provincia, eran frecuentes sus salidas a comer con sus amigos y círculo íntimo. Relatan que siempre intentaban hacer aterrizar ‘al Pato’ acerca de lo difícil y sinuoso que sería alcanzar ese objetivo. Algunos de los participantes de aquellas tertulias relatan que con mirada serena, pero optimista les decía: “yo pensaría igual que ustedes, Rancagua no tiene para tener un mundial. Estamos muy cerca de Santiago”. Pero haciendo gala de su trato afable y dinamismo, que lo caracterizaban, volvía al ataque y agregaba: “El mundial va a durar quince días, pero tenemos que aprovechar de sacar cosas para que queden en Rancagua”. Entonces, les solía pedir absoluta complicidad en aquellos propósitos, lo que en buen chileno equivalía a que: “lo ayudáramos a mentir” para que la organización del mundial se decidiera por Rancagua.

Nicolás Díaz, también contemporáneo de Mekis, señalaría que: “él era un hombre de trato muy afable, agrupador de voluntades y trabajólico por naturaleza. Tenía muchos amigos en la empresa, incluso algunos democratacristianos que cooperaban harto con su labor. Se obsesionó con el mundial hasta que lo sacó, como presidente del O’Higgins y luego, como alcalde de Rancagua. Lo ayudaron en eso su carácter y su buena relación con el gobierno, él era muy amigo del presidente Alessandri: había sido su jefe de campaña en la presidencial de 1958”.
Sus amigos y conocidos relatan que, durante aproximadamente un año, viajó permanentemente a Santiago para reunirse y cenar con Carlos Dittborn, quien presidia el Comité Ejecutivo del Mundial de Fútbol. A su vez, tampoco descuidó su flanco más importante que era su trato con la empresa cuprífera, la que se había transformado en su gran aval ante la dirigencia deportiva nacional y, cuyo compromiso en noviembre de 1960, era clave para la realización del torneo en la ciudad: la ampliación del estadio William Braden.
Es agosto de 1961, el boletín oficial del torneo mostraba en su página interior una fotografía que evidenciaba los arreglos que se estaban haciendo, así como las comitivas que lo inspeccionaba. En efecto, se puede ver a un conjunto de autoridades en lo que hoy es la tribuna o galería Angosturas, supervisando el levantamiento de esa plataforma del estadio. Se inspecciona también la cancha, así como los arreglos en la tribuna presidencial. El comunicado oficial dice: “Las obras de ampliación del Estadio Braden se encuentran en satisfactorio grado de progreso. Sobre el terreno mismo, los organismos interesados, dispusieron la ubicación de tribunas de prensa, Casetas para transmisión, oficina para corresponsales y otras instalaciones técnicas”.
Las imágenes hablaban por sí solas y la meta de Mekis se cumplía lentamente y, si bien los trabajos evidenciaban un notable atraso respecto de las fechas comprometidas por la organización, al final, estarían disponibles al momento de comenzar la competición. En los tiempos de la vieja república, las provincias y ciudades que quedaban fuera de las diez manzanas que rodean a La Moneda, solo tenían dos maneras de conseguir financiamiento para las obras que querían emprender. Una, era la conmemoración de alguna festividad importante de la urbe que la vinculara con el desarrollo de la nación chilena, como el Sesquicentenario de la Batalla de Rancagua, que los exalcaldes Mekis y Nicolás Díaz con la bancada municipal DC aprovecharon al máximo. Esto sirvió para proyectar, empezar o concluir algunas de las obras que no pudieron hacerse al alero de la gesta de 1962. La segunda, que invocó Nicolás Díaz, al momento de dar a luz ‘su criatura’ – el proyecto de ley para celebrar el Sesquicentenario de la Batalla de Rancagua -, era la conocida ley del cobre, 11828, vigente desde la década del cincuenta, que dejaba una porcentaje de los recursos por las ventas del mineral en la provincia donde se producía.
Se cuenta que el mismo Mekis, miembro de una destacada tribu empresarial de la capital que echó raíces en la provincia, cumplía una labor educativa con el resto de los alcaldes de Cachapoal, en especial con Manuel Bustos de Machalí, insistiéndoles en todas las ventajas que podía ofrecer a sus respectivas comunas dicho instrumento presupuestario. Narran que, de ese modo, fue como, en vísperas de la gesta deportiva, se construyó la hostería donde se hospedó la selección búlgara y el hotel Olimpo, donde se alojó la selección húngara.
En fin, la ciudad quedaba ya casi lista para el desarrollo de la gesta mundialista y el 21 de enero de 1962, en el contexto del sorteo por los grupos del Mundial, nada menos que el presidente de la FIFA, Sir Stanley Rous, visitaba la ciudad para dirigirse a Coya y recorrer las instalaciones que había dispuesto la Braden Copper para el hospedaje de la selección inglesa. Ya estaba todo listo para recibir a los equipos mundialistas en la subsede. Los ingleses, como ya lo dijimos, estarían en Coya, Argentina en Sauzal, Bulgaria en Machalí y Hungría en Rengo.
Actuales condiciones de la Casa de Huéspedes de Sauzal
Si bien las ampliaciones del estadio se inauguraron el 19 de abril, con el famoso encuentro entre el equipo local y la selección argentina, la inauguración de la subsede del campeonato se efectuó el 25 de mayo en el remozado estadio, a las 12 del día, con las cuatro representaciones en disputa presentes, todas las autoridades del caso y, como es costumbre nuestra, con delegaciones de escuelas que mostraban a los visitantes sus estandartes. De allí al cóctel, en el salón de sesiones de la municipalidad, oportunidad en que el conocido Arturo Gatica entretuvo a los visitantes. Luego, habló Mekis y resumió así la concreción de su sueño: “Rancagua está hoy de fiesta, el deporte se ha incorporado a nuestro calendario con letras imborrables y ya es una realidad la que tantas veces soñáramos: Rancagua, subsede del Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol”. Luego, resumía su calvario hasta llegar allí: “Tras los rostros satisfechos de hoy, tras el gesto cordial de nuestros huéspedes, tras la euforia deportiva que vive nuestro suelo, han quedado borradas como por un pañuelo gigante las vigilias, las incertidumbres y las desesperanzas. Ya pertenecen al pasado los largos días de febril agitación que precedieron a esta hermosa ocasión que estamos viviendo. Hoy celebramos el triunfo de la fe y la perseverancia y la coronación del esfuerzo de hombres que supieron tener fe en un ideal y actuar unidos en torno a él”.
En fin, Rancagua nunca tuvo razones para tener un mundial; sin embargo, contra viento y marea, Mekis lo logró. El 7 de junio estuvo listo el grupo IV y estos son los datos estadísticos de la subsede minera:

Tuvo la asistencia más baja del torneo, incluso bajo la sede nortina de Arica, con un promedio de 10.598, teniendo la misma cantidad de partidos. La mejor asistencia fue, sin duda, la de Santiago con diez encuentros y un promedio de 66.397 espectadores; le siguió Viña, con un total de ocho disputas y una media de 12.872 asistentes; luego, Arica y finalmente, Rancagua.
Sin embargo, antes de pasar al análisis final del Mundial en Rancagua, aún queda un partido: el de cuartos de final entre los favoritos húngaros y los desconocidos checoeslovacos, que dieron la sorpresa en el grupo tres; primero, al empatar con Brasil y luego, al dejar eliminada a España. Ganaron los checos y la asistencia superó los 12.000 espectadores.
¿Y fue tan malo el Mundial en Rancagua?
¿Y qué pasó con Rancagua? Bueno, hemos visto que la crítica también ha sido profunda en el sentido de que ya, en un mal torneo, Rancagua fue ‘la peor sede’. ¿Pero, es tan así? Pienso que no. El fútbol que se practicó en la subsede fue el que quisieron los organizadores del evento. Aquí no vino ninguna de las selecciones que pintaban para campeón; de hecho, el cabeza de serie –Argentina – quedó eliminado en primera ronda, y su presencia en la ciudad se debió más bien a la posibilidad del arribo masivo de hinchas trasandinos, que jamás llegaron. Respecto de Inglaterra, su selección está lejos de ser el equipo que ganara cuatro años después, y al que solo sobrevivirán en la planilla titular Charlton y Hurst; Bulgaria llegó y se fue siendo un enigma; Hungría, con apenas un par de supervivientes de la leyenda de 1954, se transformará en una grata sorpresa, que los periodistas designan como favorita. Hay que recordar que son los propios medios los que llegan a señalar que en Rancagua se está practicando el mejor fútbol del evento. Es cierto que ninguno de los dos clasificados de octavos – Hungría e Inglaterra –llegarán a la final, pero también es cierto que ambas selecciones se topan en cuartos con los que si llegarán a ella: Brasil elimina de modo irrefutable a Inglaterra y ya hemos visto que el buen fútbol húngaro cae rendido, en un entretenido partido ante el ‘cerrojo’ checo.

Dos, ya vimos el promedio de asistencia y todo depende del prisma con que se mire. Tres, ¿fue malo el Mundial para Rancagua? todo lo contrario: ya hemos visto, desde un comienzo, que el principal responsable del torneo en la ciudad, Patricio Mekis, le confiesa a sus íntimos que: “El Mundial va a durar quince días, pero tenemos que aprovechar de sacar cosas para que queden en Rancagua”. Y así fue, tanto Mekis como el gobierno central, incluso los privados – ampliación del Hotel Santiago, entre otros – y los propios vecinos, participan de un verdadero ‘trabajo colectivo’ para embellecer la ciudad y oponerla a tono con la grandeza del certamen ¿Algo más qué explicar?
Se ha dicho también que en este grupo se dio la abulia y la gente le dio la espalda al Mundial y a sus selecciones. No hubo compromiso ciudadano con el torneo. Matamala ha dicho que este grupo fue el de ‘la indiferencia’. Y ha citado varios ejemplos para ello. Dijo que los búlgaros pasaron absolutamente inadvertidos entre los vecinos de Machalí; que los húngaros son hasta descorteses con los entusiasmados habitantes de Rengo y, a su llegada, rechazan no solo la cazuela, sino que le da un portazo al pie de cueca que los esperaba y prefieren irse a dormir. Respecto de Inglaterra, se ha señalado que están cómodos, pero en el más pleno aislamiento en Coya; de los argentinos, ni hablar, quedan lejos en Sauzal, donde el frío precordillerano se les cuela en los huesos, y los obliga a entrenar hasta con ¡bufanda! Pero, ¿es tan así?

En Machalí, tanto Emiliano Cerpa – el fotógrafo oficial de los búlgaros – como José Santiago Santis indican que, a su llegada al pueblo, los vecinos se vuelcan en masa a recibirlos: “el equipo llegó a la plaza en un bus antecedido por un taxi. Eran 24 jugadores altos, de ojos claros y delgados que llamaron la atención en esa época, siendo recibidos entre gritos de jovencitas, damas y gente de todas las edades, demorando en bajar de los vehículos”. No solo eso, ellos mismos, ante la falta de vehículos, les pidieron a los vecinos sus bicicletas para salir a pasear; otros guardan los palos de los arcos, y una ex jovencita, que hoy tiene 70 años, hasta la toalla de Tychi, el favorito de todos. La indiferencia es tan grande que, incluso este año, conmemorarán con la embajada los cincuenta años del evento con la propia selección Magyar; de los ingleses ni hablar, ya se reporteaba cómo la selección británica se había transformado rápidamente en el chiche de los vecinos, y eso no cambiaría hasta el final. Tanto fue el cariño que les expresaron los coyinos a los cracks del Reino Unido que nadie se explica la aparición de niños de cabello rubio y ojos azules, luego de la partida de los súbditos de su majestad. Respecto de los argentinos, y por razones obvias, son los que más se mimetizaron con los locales. Nicolás Díaz, quien, por su función, se hizo rápidamente amigo de la selección, en particular de sus médicos, señala que salen a comer juntos, se les organizan cenas, incluso hasta una despedida donde: “cantaron hasta aburrirse el tango Volver. Pero no regresaron nunca“ ¿Es esa la indiferencia de visitantes y visitados? Parece que no.
