Space Invaders, nouvelle del trauma

Nona Fernández, destacada novelista de la generación nacida en los 70, brilla en obras como Space Invaders, acudiendo al recurso con el que l@s escritor@s coetáne@s encontraron el modo de saldar cuentas con el pasado: ficcionalizar hechos que estremecieron su niñez, como fue el Caso Degollados de 1985.

Hace casi 10 años, Nona Fernández publicó una nouvelle que ya va en su quinta edición y que también ha sido llevada al teatro en una adaptación hecha por la propia autora y dirigida por su marido, Marcelo Leonart, también escritor. Esta novela corta es un buen ejemplo de la ficcionalización del trauma de la generación que crecimos en dictadura y que no conocimos una sociedad democrática hasta 1990. Fernández tiene una obra que, en su totalidad, entra perfectamente en lo que se denomina literatura del trauma. Es decir, un tipo de textos que emulan un pasado traumático en particular. Este tipo de obras son todas posmodernas, desde los 80 en adelante, con marcas como el pastiche (mezcla de textos), la hibridez discursiva (varios tipos de discurso), elementos oníricos o pesadillescos, la repetición y la interrupción en la narración que vuelve al pasado del trauma. En el texto de Fernández se transita entre el género epistolar, la narración en primera persona y las pesadillas de un grupo de alumnos de básica en los años 80.

Uno de los elementos más importantes en la literatura del trauma es la presencia de los nudos de memoria (memory knots), identificados por el historiador Steve Stern en sus estudios sobre la dictadura chilena y que, en mi trabajo sobre la literatura del trauma, he identificado como una característica de estos textos, lo que es desarrollado en mi próximo libro (Crímenes dictatoriales: la literatura policial como literatura del trauma. Madrid: Pliegos). Según Stern, estos nudos: “en el cuerpo social interrumpen el flujo normal de ´reflejos impensados´ y hábitos. Ellos fuerzan asuntos de memoria y olvido al dominio público” (120). Es decir, hechos que fueron públicos y que afectaron a la sociedad en su conjunto.

En el caso de la obra de Fernández, hay nudos de memoria que se repiten. Uno de ellos es el Caso Degollados de 1985. En su novela La dimensión desconocida (2017, ganadora del premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz), en la cuarta sección, la narradora (alter ego de Fernández) cuenta la historia de una compañera de colegio, Estrella González, la hija de uno de los asesinos en el Caso Degollados. La narradora refleja la generación de hij@s de víctimas y victimarios y usa de modo muy efectivo la repetición y el intertexto (la referencia de un texto dentro de otro) para iluminar la situación del trauma. Esto está reflejado en la letra de una canción de Billy Joel que dice: We didn’t start the fire, no we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it (198) (no empezamos el fuego, no lo prendimos, pero intentamos luchar contra él). Esta frase es crucial, porque ilustra muy bien la situación de muchos escritor@s, nacidos en los 70, quienes crecieron durante la dictadura y que han intentado porfiadamente traer de vuelta el pasado traumático en sus novelas, como un modo simbólico de pelear contra el olvido, las víctimas y el horror de la dictadura.

Este nudo en torno a la figura de Estrella González, que menciona en la cuarta parte de La dimensión desconocida, es el centro de la historia que ya había contado en Space Invaders. Aquí la historia está enfocada en la experiencia de la narradora y un grupo de compañeros de colegio, que incluye a Estrella. La narración está fragmentada por las cartas que le envía Estrella a la narradora y las pesadillas del grupo de compañeros de curso. Tal como en La dimensión desconocida, se usa la historia de víctimas y victimarios. En el caso de esta novela, el victimario es Andrés Valenzuela, alias Papudo, quien en 1984 dio una entrevista a la revista Cauce con el titular “Yo torturé”. En Space Invaders, el victimario es el padre de Estrella, quien estuvo involucrado en el Caso Degollados. La historia que cuenta Fernández es la reconstrucción de recuerdos colectivos de ese grupo de licean@s que fueron compañeros de curso de Estrella (https://culturizarte.cl/entrevista-a-la-actriz-y-autora-de-space-invaders-nona-fernandez-si-no-estoy-escribiendo-ni-actuando-no-se-como-pensar-el-mundo/). A partir de esa historia real, Fernández construye la ficción del mismo modo que lo hace en otras obras como La dimensión desconocida. También, como en esa novela, utiliza en el título una referencia a la cultura popular de los 80. Como en toda buena obra posmoderna, estas referencias no son gratuitas, sino que forman parte del pastiche que las caracteriza. En el caso de Space Invaders no es solo la referencia a este videojuego, sino que la estructura de la historia está en directa relación con las etapas del juego ochentero. También, sirve como metáfora de la invasión a la que estuvo sometida la población de Chile durante los años de dictadura. En el caso de La dimensión desconocida, el título de la famosa serie televisiva también sirve como una metáfora sobre el horror que vivimos como sociedad durante 17 años.

La generación de escritor@s nacidos en los 70 ha logrado encontrar un modo de volver al pasado de la dictadura que las generaciones anteriores no consiguieron. En vez de hacer referencias oblicuas o metáforas elaboradas se centraron en crear ficciones a partir de casos reales, de nudos de memoria. La influencia de Roberto Bolaño con Estrella distante y Nocturno de Chile es indiscutible. Sin embargo, eso no quita que esta generación de escritor@s como Álvaro Bisama, Nona Fernández y, hasta cierto punto, Alejandro Zambra hayan encontrado una voz propia en la narración del pasado traumático, desde la infancia.

El próximo año se cumplen 10 años de la publicación de Space Invaders. Es un librito que no toma más de un par de horas en ser leído. No es una obra de difícil acceso con palabras rebuscadas o lenguaje florido. Es accesible a cualquiera. Tanto así que se ha incluido en planes escolares de lectura. Eso no significa que no sea una obra compleja, porque lo es. Como toda buena literatura tiene capas, cada lector llegará a la capa que pueda de acuerdo a sus habilidades. Mi recomendación es que si no la ha leído, lo haga. Lo hará pensar largo y tendido sobre nuestro pasado, nuestro presente y nuestro futuro como sociedad. Hoy estamos en una etapa crucial de nuestra historia y es precisamente la desmemoria lo que provoca que muchos se inclinen por una opción en el plebiscito del 4 de septiembre, sin pensar bien en lo que aquello significa. Esta novela nos obliga a pensar en un pasado para much@s olvidado, para otr@s desconocido. Cualquiera sea su caso, invierta un par de horas de su fin de semana y lea este cortísimo texto. No se arrepentirá.
