En la preservación de nuestra cultura, cumplen un rol fundamental las leyendas que se han transmitido de manera oral desde antaño. Enriquecen el folclore de nuestro país y el mejor escenario para su narración es una fogata en compañía de otros oyentes este breve rescate cultural es nuestra manera de revivir esas leyendas que, de una u otra manera, enriquecen el folclore de nuestro país.
Hoy le invitamos a dejar de lado la navegación en TikTok, darle play a YouTube, o seguir posando en instagram y, en su lugar, le convocamos a abrir una ventana del recuerdo y revivir una leyenda en la voz del “Tata Oscar”. En la cita de esta noche, recordamos a «el chonchón», una especie de ave nocturna de mal agüero. Su canto se escucha algo así como «tué… tué…». También se le conoce por ese nombre (tuetué), palabra que nunca debe mencionarse en voz alta ya que, al llamar la atención de esta misteriosa criatura, acarrea la desgracia.
Los calores del verano brindan la oportunidad de conversar hasta tarde. En casa o de camping, el humo de la fogata nos ofrece una tregua contra los zancudos. El Tata Oscar añade dos hojas de cedrón al mate y atiza el fuego para acelerar el hervor del agua en un tarro choquero. Tras dos caladas al cigarro, carraspea la voz y comienza la historia.
“Ese pájaro, yo lo escuché varias veces cuando niño…”
Según el Tata Oscar, el Chonchón es conocido por predecir la muerte. Y a mí me consta que, en la localidad de Machalí, aún hay personas que afirman haber escuchado su tenebroso canto poco antes de la muerte de alguna persona del vecindario.
La leyenda dice que en realidad no sería un pájaro sino la cabeza de un brujo que, mediante el uso de pomadas, aceites y ungüentos mágicos, puede separar la cabeza del cuerpo. Esta decapitación incluye un crecimiento de las orejas a modo de alas lo que le permite volar en los oscuros cielos del pueblo. Tan macabro procedimiento sería necesario para acceder a cavernas secretas, donde los brujos podrían aprender nuevos conocimientos enseñados por poderosos exponentes de las fuerzas del mal. También para atormentar y alimentarse de la sangre de las personas que duermen desprevenidas (y que se han “portado mal”).
Tal como lo narra el escritor José Donoso en su libro «El obsceno pájaro de la noche», esta misteriosa capacidad no es exclusiva de los varones, sino que también puede ser usada por las mujeres que, dado su papel puertas adentro en los hogares de la antigua sociedad rural, resultaban ser mucho más peligrosas y manipuladoras.
Cuando el Tata Oscar añadía unas gotas de agua ardiente al mate, terminaba por contarnos que, a pesar de sus poderes sobrehumanos, existían algunos métodos para defenderse o neutralizar los efectos de estas nefastas criaturas: -Hay que echar sal en el fogón o en la cocina mientras se recita «pasa Chonchón tu camino». También sirve quemar cáscaras de ajo recitando la frase «Martes hoy, martes mañana, martes toda la semana».
Tal vez sea conveniente hacer un paréntesis para destacar que el mito de las cabezas voladoras no es exclusivo de nuestro país. En Perú (Uma), Bolivia (Qati Qati) y Amazonas e incluso en Tailandia (donde se le conoce como Krasue) o Japón (Rokurobuki) aparecen leyendas sobre cabezas que flotan atormentando a los viajeros solitarios. Quizá la leyenda tenga relación con los jíbaros del Amazonas, conocidos antiguamente por su “arte” en encoger cabezas humanas y usarlas como talismanes y trofeos.
Si el Chonchón se mostraba muy insistente, se recomendaba dibujar con sal una estrella de cinco puntas y colocar un cuchillo en el centro apuntando hacia arriba. Si se hace correctamente la cabeza del brujo cae del cielo y se ensarta en el cuchillo y es entonces cuando hay que incinerar la cabeza del brujo.
Finalmente, el Tata Oscar concluía diciendo que se puede llegar a un «trato» con el brujo, una especie de acuerdo o negociación.
-No hay que olvidar que por muy brujo que sean, son personas también- decía, y nos contó que un gran amigo suyo era, de hecho, un brujo al que había conocido con la fórmula en cuestión.
– Cuando se escucha al Chonchón cantando, hay que decirle ‘te invito mañana a tomar once’ o ‘ven mañana y te regalo sal”. Al otro día aparece algún desconocido pidiendo, y hay que atenderlo con lo que se ofreció. Esa es la única manera de conversarles un rato para saber qué servicios ofrecen.
Recuerdo muy bien la escena final. Le pregunté:
– ¿Y usted qué le pidió, Tata?
El viejo se sonrió, lanzó la colilla al fuego y le dió la última chupada al mate.
– Vaya a acostarse, mijo. Ya es tarde.
Recuerdo que, en esos años, el tata Oscar no tenía reparos en presentar a su amigo como “el brujo” y este a su vez solo se reía de la situación. Esa amistad, que de niños nos parecía una locura, a ellos nunca les impidió compartir un vinito mientras jugaban al dominó. Así, muchos nietos crecimos creyéndonos la jugarreta hasta bien entrados en años cuando, finalmente, nos dábamos cuenta de que el apodo tenía más que ver con la economía, la política o algún lío de faldas que con algún poder mágico.
El tema central de esta leyenda también ha sido recogido por otros medios como los juegos de tablero, material audiovisual, novelas y videojuegos. Lovecraft también tiene por ahí algún cuento al respecto, solo que en ese caso el viajero no es la cabeza completa sino sólo el cerebro…
De cualquier manera, este tenebroso ser participó del imaginario colectivo de nuestro pasado campesino. Tal vez cumpliendo la función de cuco para asustar a los niños e invitarles a alejarse de peligros mucho más humanos, que aún habitan al alero de la oscuridad.
