Mañana jueves 13 de octubre se cumplen 50 años del accidente aéreo protagonizado por un equipo de rugby uruguayo, que se ha inmortalizado hasta en el cine. Bajo el lema de “50 años del milagro de los Andes”, el municipio de San Fernando, lugar desde donde fueron rescatados, conmemora el medio siglo de ocurrido el accidente con bastantes actividades.

El avión Fairchild FH-227, de las Fuerzas Armadas uruguayas, acondicionado como charter, al mando de los pilotos Julio Ferradas y Dante Lagurara, que transportaba a los rugbistas del club Old Christian, más familiares y amigos, que completaban una tripulación total de 45 pasajeros, partió rumbo a Chile el 12 de octubre de 1972. Debido a la inclemencia del tiempo el vuelo debió hace escala en Mendoza. El viernes 13 de octubre se retomó el viaje en dirección al sur en busca del paso Planchón, a 160 kilómetros de Mendoza. Por allí se puede acceder a Chile, directamente, frente a la ciudad de Curicó.
Cuando están sobrevolando la cordillera rumbo a nuestro país, uno de los pilotos reporta que se encuentran ya a la altura de la ciudad de Curicó. Con la autorización de la torre de control de Santiago, deciden, entonces, cambiar de rumbo hacia el norte con destino a la capital. Sin embargo, los pilotos no se dieron cuenta que aun sobrevolaban el macizo de Los Andes, en un punto donde su altura sobrepasaba los 4.0000 mil kilómetros de altura.
A las 15:30 horas de aquel día, y luego de 1 hora y 20 minutos de vuelo, se perdió contacto definitivo con ellos. Una mala lectura del piloto principal, sobre el lugar exacto en que se encontraban, hizo que iniciarán el descenso antes de tiempo, lo que provocó que el avión se impactase contra las montañas. Tres miembros de la tripulación y ocho pasajeros fallecieron de inmediato, producto del impacto y otros lo fueron haciendo, de a poco, como resultado de las graves lesiones provocadas. El resto fue yéndose como resultado del frío reinante y la fatiga. Se inició una intensa búsqueda sin éxito que luego se desechó. En el periodo en que estuvieron abandonados a su propia suerte llegaron incluso a practicar la antropofagia. Finalmente, dos de los supervivientes, Nando Parrado y Roberto Canessa deciden iniciar una exploración hacia el poniente, en busca de la posibilidad de salvación. Caminaron, sin equipo, y casi sin alimentos durante diez días.
Cuando ya todo parecía imposible se toparon con su primer salvavidas, don Juan Farfán, quien resultó ser un arriero que los auxilió. Luego, Pedro Cerda, quien les dio cobija y alimentación en su rancho en la cordillera y, finalmente, Sergio Catalán, el arriero que llevará la noticia hasta el retén de Carabineros de Puente Negro, lo que permitió iniciar la búsqueda de los 16 sobrevivientes de la tragedia. Pero esa es otra historia.
El propio presidente de la época, el Dr., Salvador Allende Gossens, les enviará una misiva a los tres, agradeciéndoles su intervención: “compañeros…quiero saludar en ustedes el espíritu generoso de nuestro pueblo, evidenciado, una vez más, a raíz de la dramática odisea vivida por un grupo de jóvenes deportistas uruguayos. Fueron ustedes los primeros chilenos con que ellos tomaron contacto y los que les dieron la certeza de que habían logrado salvarse”, escribió el primer mandatario.
San Fernando, conmemora los 50 años del milagro
Bajo el lema de “50 años del milagro de los Andes” el municipio local conmemora el medio siglo de ocurrido el accidente con bastantes actividades. Sebastián Osorio Munizaga, encargado coordinación fomento productivo y turismo, en entrevista con El Regionalista, manifestó lo siguiente: “en este hecho San Fernando tuvo un rol relevante, el regimiento, el club aéreo, etc., este hito revolucionó a la ciudad (…) el foco es celebrar la vida, fue un hecho notable de sobrevivencia en condiciones extremas. Uruguay no tiene cordillera y aquí quedaron atrapados en una altura superior a los 4.000 metros, sin ropa adecuada, sin alimentos. Lograr bajar y llegar a Chile es una hazaña humana. Son las ganas de vivir las que hay que conmemorar, de allí el slogan de la efeméride”.
El programa conmemorativo
El profesional del municipio indica que: “partimos el 13 de octubre, cuando ocurrió el accidente, con una actividad en el parque Buchón, con la exposición de un helicóptero rescatista y el recordatorio de la historia de lo que sucedió y traerlo a la actualidad, también habrá una actividad en el museo Lircunlauta”. En cualquier caso, el programa conmemorativo de este símbolo de superación humana y tragedia, al mismo tiempo, es el siguiente:
Cronograma 50 años, jueves 13 de octubre:
- 11:30 Sobrevuelo y aproximación por San Fernando, por parte del UH-1H de la FACH.
- 12:00 Aterrizaje en el Parque el Parque Abel Bouchon de San Fernando.
- 12:20 Historia de la Aeronave UH-1H BELL y su vinculación e importancia junto con la FACH en el accidente del 13 de octubre de 1972.
- 12:30 Acceso al público a fotografiarse con el UH-1H en exhibición hasta las 16:00 horas.
- 16:00 Retirada de la FACH y el helicóptero UH-1H.
Por lo tanto, tod@s invitad@s a participar de esta significativa conmemoración de una gran hazaña humana.
