Agotada la transmisión de la religión en la familia, fiestas como la de santa Rosa corren el riesgo de mantener la fidelidad en un pequeño grupo de mayores de edad y perderse como espacio de encuentro de las personas.

En el escenario de comunicación que han facilitado las redes sociales y la exposición a multiplicidad de contenidos, la transmisión de la cultura religiosa en la familia se ha perdido, por lo que las personas viven entre la racionalidad y prácticas de fe de todo orden. Ante ello, la tradicional devoción a santa Rosa, en Pelequén, está en riesgo de perder su carácter de encuentro y mantenerse en un grupo de adeptos de mayor edad.
Isabel Flores de Oliva moría el 24 de agosto de 1617, a la edad de 31 años con el nombre de Rosa, transformándose en la primera santa de América en la capital del virreynato del Perú, uno de los dos más relevantes de la corona española en el continente. Tras haber dado signos de una intensa precocidad espiritual, a los veinte años tomó el hábito de terciaria dominica, y consagró su vida a la atención de los enfermos y niños y a las prácticas ascéticas, extendiéndose pronto su fama de santa.
En vida, padeció instancias de hondo vacío e incomprensión, con una vivencia espiritual repleta de éxtasis y prodigios, como su supuesta comunicación con plantas y animales, llegando incluso a alcanzar su matrimonio espiritual con Cristo. El papá Clemente la beatificó el 15 de abril de 1668 y su sucesor, Clemente X, la canonizó el 12 de abril de 1671.
Hasta el día de hoy, en el sitio donde pasó sus últimos días, hay un pozo en que la gente tira papeles con una petición que de ser cumplida significa el retorno al lugar o la retribución de “la manda”.
La devoción llega a Malloa
La proximidad geográfica con el Perú indicaría que no estaba lejos el día en que dicha tradición se extendería a este territorio. Cuenta la tradición oral que la fiesta religiosa de santa Rosa de Pelequén se originó a comienzos del siglo XIX cuando llegó a la zona un soldado peruano herido, portando una imagen de la santa limeña a quien se le atribuyó el milagro de su sanación.
Según el historiador colchagüino, Víctor León, la prensa sanfernandina menciona la festividad antes de 1891, describiendo cómo el camino entre San Fernando y Pelequén era cubierto por personas que iban a pagar alguna manda a pie, a caballo, en carreta o carruaje. Desde el primer momento, la festividad religiosa se mezclará con rasgos propios del paganismo, siendo su característica hasta hoy. Quienes llegaban a esta localidad durante la festividad, también lo hacían gracias al tren que funcionaba con itinerarios especiales para movilizar personas no sólo de San Fernando, sino de Rancagua y hasta Santiago. En 1893, el periódico “La Justicia” comenta no solo el panorama de la festividad sino además algunos accidentes que sucedían en ella: “concurrió un gentío inmenso, haciéndose estrechos los muchos carros que hubo que agregar a los trenes ordinarios, expresos y extraordinarios, para conducir tanta gente. Todo marchó bien hasta que un desgraciado como conmovedor accidente, vino a perturbar la tranquilidad de los devotos y novedosos. Nada menos que una carreta tirada por enfurecidos bueyes, espantados por la detonación de los voladores que principiaron a quemarse partió por medio de la masa de gente, dando como resultado el atropello de muchos, la fractura de piernas y brazos de otros, que fue en número de siete y muerte de una pobre mujer.”
Sacro y profano van de la mano
Uno de los relatos más detallados de Santa Rosa de Pelequén fue publicado durante los primeros años del siglo XX, por la revista Zigzag de Santiago, catalogando esta festividad como “El dieciocho de la religiosidad Colchagüina” que, al igual que las festividades religiosas de la Edad Media, conjugaba los rituales eminentemente católicos, con el baile, canto, alcohol y el comercio que no le eran ajenos, lo que corroboraban distintas crónicas de prensa de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.
El consumo de alcohol y el baile era parte de los distintos locales o chinganas que aparecían en días previos alrededor de la iglesia. La gran ingesta de bebidas alcohólicas provocaba muchas veces riñas de envergadura, siendo normal una cifra importante de muertos durante los días de los festejos: “el licor corre a torrentes en una verdadera inundación de las que son muy pocos los que logran sustraerse y, por consiguiente, el epílogo de la gran festividad provinciana lo forman casi siempre el cortejo de varios muertos que van al cementerio y el de muchos heridos que, por esta época, aumentan considerablemente la estadística de los hospitales de la región…. No hay casa en que no resuene el alborotador rasgue de la danza popular y a falta de techo, los retrasados a la fiesta se instalan en plena vía, haciendo abrumadora competencia a las ventas de licor establecidas a cada paso y a los jugadores que prueban la suerte en toda clase de ingeniosos aparatos, desde el monte clásico sobre el poncho tendido en el suelo, hasta la tómbola y la ruleta, donde se obtienen a granel imágenes de la santa, dinero, medallitas, frutas tropicales, etc.”
Así se fue configurando esta tradición religiosa que permitió la sociabilidad de todo un territorio -marcado por la institución de la hacienda y la casa patronal-, que sobrevivió al tiempo, aunque durante sus últimos años se fueron imponiendo restricciones variadas, pero cuya esencia era su mestizaje con una cultura popular pagana.
El riesgo de perder un lugar de encuentro
Al igual que el año anterior, en 2021, no habrá celebración presencial y no serán pocos los comerciantes y mercachifles que la echarán de menos, en especial cuando era un festejo que daba vida no solo a una sociabilidad popular, sino que activaba una pequeña microeconomía local.
según Pablo Lacoste, académico del Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de la Universidad de Santiago, desde una perspectiva antropológica, la importancia de esta festividad estaba dada por su masividad, construida de abajo hacia arriba:” tengamos en cuenta que esta fiesta gira alrededor de un ícono religioso de origen peruano, el ícono que se trasladó desde Lima a Chile generó a su alrededor interés popular por su capacidad de vincular a las personas locales en un espacio de encuentro que se fue nutriendo a lo largo de los años. Alrededor de la conmemoración de la imagen de Santa Rosa de Lima, las personas han tenido ese día un lugar de encuentro, de construcción y de renovación de vínculos sociales, entonces allí se encontraban familiares, amigos, vecinos, personas, trascendiendo lo estrictamente religioso, y pasando a ser un espacio de construcción sociocultural. Las personas sentían que tenían que ir a esta celebración, porque pasaban cosas relevantes en sus vidas».
Las verdaderas amenazas a la devoción de santa Rosa no tienen que ver con que un año se pueda suspender por motivos de fuerza mayor, sino que no se preste atención a su dimensión cultural y patrimonial.
De allí que la principal preocupación del académico sea que “las verdaderas amenazas no tienen que ver con que un año se pueda suspender por motivos de fuerza mayor, sino que no se preste atención a su dimensión cultural y patrimonial, y sí se permite que se degrade una fiesta popular en una feria persa donde se re-vendan productos chinos importados, se venda comida chatarra y donde se procure reunir público en torno a la cultura de masas”.
O en palabras del sociólogo Marcel Albano, “siendo la escuela y la familia tradicional los mayores agentes de socialización de contenido religioso en el siglo pasado, con la llegada de los aparatos celulares y las redes sociales, la experiencia y contenido de la fe cambió, creándose fenómenos de separación entre religión y espiritualidad. Esta fractura hace que, en la búsqueda de milagros, sanaciones y experiencias místicas, los individuos encuentren nuevos puntos de referencia, generando eclecticismo e hibridez. Es así como un individuo tiene la libertad de escoger entre varias concepciones que coexisten en la construcción de creencias. Puede practicar yoga, tener una estatuilla del Buda junto a Santa Rosa de Lima y creer que Jesús fue un alienígena ancestral: al tiempo que el discurso científico y la tecnología secularizan los espacios de conocimiento mágico, estos últimos se metamorfosean con el googleo de información nueva e inmediata”.
“La barrera cultural existente entre las generaciones digitales y análogas, el fuerte posicionamiento mediático de las nuevas sensibilidades identitarias, y la escasa legitimidad de las instituciones religiosas tradicionales, nos hace observar que estas manifestaciones de fe se circunscriben a grupos focalizados de población ubicados en el segmento de mayores de 50 años”.
