El ministro de Agricultura Esteban Valenzuela, vino a presentar el libro de los historiadores locales “Colchagua Pandémica” y a recibir el reconocimiento de Bosques para Cachapoal y de la comisión local de derechos humanos, por su incansable compromiso con su defensa y la del medioambiente, en el contexto de la Escuale Verde de Verano que anualmente organiza la agrupación Bosques para Cachapoal, colectivo que él mismo ayudó a fundar.

El jueves 12 de enero llegó, como no es habitual en él, anticipadamente a la casa central de la Universidad de O’Higgins (UO’H), institución que él mismo ayudó a crear cuando fue presidente de la comisión asesora presidencial de Bachelet II para la Regionalización y la Descentralización. De las diez medidas aprobadas por quien entonces era candidata presidencial y que comunicó Alberto Arenas, jefe programático de la campaña y luego ministro de hacienda, dos quedaron para los anales de la historia: la creación de dos universidades públicas – la UO’H y la de Aysén-, más la elección de gobernador.
A Esteban lo conocí el año 1985, mi primer año en la universidad de Talca, cuando vino, como vicepresidente de la FEUC, a respaldar la instalación de nuestra primera federación de estudiantes y yo era un mocoso que iniciaba recién, como delegado de mi curso y mi carrera como dirigente estudiantil atípico.
En el contexto de la universidad de verano, que anualmente organiza la agrupación Bosques para Cachapoal, colectivo que él mismo ayudó a fundar, vino a presentar el libro de los historiadores locales “Colchagua Pandémica” y a recibir el reconocimiento de Bosques para Cachapoal y de la comisión local de derechos humanos, por su incansable compromiso con su defensa y la del medioambiente, motivos por los cuales se ha ganado más de algún enemigo poderoso.
Pidió expresamente no ser invitado como secretario de estado, sino como un compañero más de la agrupación medioambientalista.
La sala A-101 del campus Rancagua estaba repleta de ex compañeros de lucha de los años 80’, de funcionarios municipales que hasta hoy valoran su gestión como un alcalde modernizador, de ecologistas, de nuevas generaciones, de luchadores de derechos humanos y de varios de sus amigos que lo han acompañado siempre en sus glorias y en sus travesías por el desierto.
“En poco tiempo hemos impulsado hartas cosas desde Bosques para Cachapoal como desde el Ministerio de agricultura”, señalaPatricia Segura, presidenta de la agrupación defensora de los árboles. Asimismo destacó su “permanente compromiso con las luchas medioambientales y el costo personal que ha veces ello le ha significado”, al momento de entregar el galvano junto al socio cooperador de la institución, Juan Alegría.
Por su parte. José Luis Almonacid, emblemático representante de los derechos humanos en la región señaló que: “Esteban desde que fue alcalde siempre nos ha acompañado en nuestras luchas, como alcalde, diputado, académico y hoy ministro, siempre nos ha respaldado, en particular hoy cuando junto a la UO’H y otras organizaciones estamos intentado levantar el memorial de los derechos humanos en esta región, la única donde no existe. Este reconocimiento es lo mínimo que podemos hacer por una persona que siempre se la ha jugado a concho por los derechos humanos”, espetó al momento de entregar el diploma honorífico al exalcalde de Rancagua.
Enseguida fue el turno de Esteban Valenzuela, quien partió su alocución con voz enérgica diciendo: “aquí estamos y seguimos luchando”; luego en su intervención señaló que: “desde que asumí como alcalde, allá por inicio de los 90, siempre trabajamos codo a codo en la creación del vivero municipal, en aumentar las áreas verdes y asfaltar las calles polvorientas de la ciudad así como pusimos una plaqueta afuera de los tribunales de justicia recordando las violaciones a los derechos humanos que no le gustó al poder judicial de entonces”. En tono irónico manifestó: “parece que desde joven he tenido dificultades con la institucionalidad judicial y creamos el paseo de los derechos humanos aquí frente a donde hoy está instalada la universidad”.
El Regionalista, entre los saludos y abrazos de sus viejos y nuevos camaradas de lucha, pudo hablar con él, y le preguntó ¿cuál era el significado personal de este reconocimiento y esto fue lo que nos señaló: “quiero agradecer mucho a los organizadores de este evento por la sorpresa de este reconocimiento que me da un poco de vergüenza ajena, porque es mi organización, en la cual milito y yo mismo ayude a crear y lo asumo con responsabilidad y sencillez de una lucha común. En poco tiempo hemos impulsado hartas cosas desde Bosques y desde el ministerio de Agricultura: las cuencas, la prohibición de plaguicidas tóxicos, duplicación en las próximas semanas de la extensión de tierra conocida, un programa de transición a la agroecología, recuperación de cultivos tradicionales, y varias otras cosas”.
Respecto del reconocimiento por la agrupación de derechos humanos manifestó que: “no me lo esperaba, lo agradezco mucho en tiempos de la ‘justicia en la medida de lo posible’ logramos reconocer la memoria de Luis Almonacid y de Julio Muñoz Otárola y tantos y tantas que sufrieron la dictadura”.
Luego compartió con amigos, autoridades del gobierno regional, el vicerrector académico de la UOH, Marcello Visconti, quien también asistió al homenaje de quien, también contribuyó en buena medida a hacer posible el nacimiento de la universidad pública regional.
