Sin duda, el universo ha sido uno de los grandes misterios que han intrigado a las personas desde tiempos inmemoriales, cuando mirando las estrellas trataban de descifrar el destino, conocer una ruta marítima o determinar un calendario. Chile posee uno de los cielos más apropiados para la investigación astronómica. Así se comprueba por la gran cantidad de proyectos internacionales y nacionales, y los grandes y poderosos telescopios, que se encuentran principalmente en el norte del país.
Y es el universo y la vida en este, el tema que hoy nos permite presentarles y conversar del libro ¿Y si somos alienígenas? Un viaje por la química del universo, con su autora, Natalia Inostroza Pino, quien es doctora en física química molecular de la Universidad Andrés Bello, y actualmente se desempeña como académica de la Universidad Autónoma de Chile y como directora del núcleo de astroquímica y astrofísica de esta casa de estudios. Además, la Dra. Inostroza pertenece a la Asociación Red de Investigadoras, asociación sin fines de lucro que busca visibilizar a mujeres haciendo investigación, así como todas las barreras que les impiden tener carreras académicas a la par de sus colegas hombres.
¿Y si somos alienígenas? Un viaje por la química del universo es un libro que entre sus características posee realidad aumentada que, en términos simples, es una tecnología que permite superponer o mezclar elementos virtuales sobre nuestra visión de la realidad. De esto y mucho más conversamos en esta entrevista con El Regionalista.
¿Cómo surge la idea que generar el libro ¿Y si somos alienígenas? Un viaje por la química del universo
La idea de generar este libro está relacionada intrínsecamente con la línea de investigación que he desarrollado desde mi tesis doctoral, durante mis postdoctorados en el extranjero y en Chile. Luego, ya desde mi inserción en la academia, he creado este grupo de astroquímica y siempre he tenido esta idea de llegar al público general en diferentes aspectos: en temas de extensión, en temas de discusión científica y, por supuesto, que también en los temas de investigación que yo desarrollo. Creo que es muy importante que la sociedad esté al tanto de las investigaciones que se hacen, de la evidencia que existe, a través de nosotros, los investigadores, quienes realizamos ciencia dura. Entonces, creo que es casi un deber social el transmitir el conocimiento que nosotros incorporamos y desarrollamos en nuestros laboratorios, debemos transmitirlo a la sociedad. Con esa idea en mente pensé este libro: contarle a la sociedad, a los niños que se hace en esta línea de investigación que parece ser tan innovadora.
¿Por qué cree importante desarrollar estos temas en forma didáctica?
Porque creo que hay que motivar, despertar el interés de los niños desde pequeños en estas áreas relacionadas con ciencias, tecnología y matemáticas, por ejemplo, y tiene que ser en forma didáctica porque no podemos poner un libro con millones de ecuaciones para explicarles cosas, porque efectivamente no van a entender nada, no les va a parecer entretenido, no vamos a despertar el interés por este proceso. Por lo tanto, creo que la didáctica en este proyecto, que finalmente terminó siendo un producto, un libro de divulgación es muy relevante. La gráfica desarrollada, los personajes, la forma en que se exponen los textos a través de diálogos, la realidad aumentada, que se utiliza a lo largo de todo este libro, creo que es una forma de motivar y despertar el interés por estas áreas, por áreas de la ciencia en diferentes tipos de público: público general, público adolescente, pero también muy enfocado en los niños.
¿De qué se trata el libro ¿Y si somos alienígenas? Un viaje por la química del universo ¿Qué podemos encontrar en él?
El libro, tal cual como lo dice es: ¿y si somos alienígenas? Es una pregunta que yo quisiera que cada lector respondiese y es un viaje por la química del universo, literalmente, van a encontrar 8 capítulos, y van a ir de la mano aprendiendo desde lo más simple a lo más difícil. Ojalá, al final de la lectura, cada uno pudiese responder si efectivamente cree si somos o no somos alienígenas, ese es mi llamado. En cada uno de los capítulos vamos a ir hablando sobre la evidencia científica que va de la mano con las investigaciones que yo he ido desarrollando.
Este libro se destaca por ser interactivo, ¿qué tipo de interacciones podemos realizar a través de él?
Es bastante interactivo, como les mencioné tiene realidad aumentada, pero hay otras cosas muy importantes en el libro, tiene audiolibro, cada capítulo está ligado en la descarga gratuita en ediciones de Universidad Autónoma de Chile. Se puede descargar el audiolibro animado para cada capítulo. Entonces, ¿qué pretendíamos ahí con ese concepto? abarcar niños con capacidades diferentes y también que niños pequeños que todavía no sepan leer puedan verlo, puedan entender de que se habla: ¿qué hay en el universo? ¿qué es la química? ¿de qué estamos compuestos? ¿cómo se origina la vida en el planeta?, son temas que se han hablado históricamente y que los pongo ahí plasmados en un libro para ellos. También, hay muchos modelos moleculares en la realidad aumentada, con la idea de que los más grandecitos incorporen realmente, por ejemplo, algo tan simple como la estructura química del agua, no es un simple H2O, sino que es una red donde se forman puentes de hidrógeno y hemos puesto un modelo molecular de eso, con tal que sean modelitos que queden incorporados en su mente, inconscientemente. Sin duda, eso es un objetivo que está ahí implícito. También, podemos observar en el libro que las protagonistas son 3 mujeres, porque he destacado en cada capítulo la labor de diferentes científicas a nivel mundial y esto es para fortalecer liderazgos femeninos a través de todo el libro. La protagonista es una mujer investigadora acompañada de dos niñas que viajan con ella. Entonces, es para fomentar este liderazgo femenino sobre todo en estas áreas que nosotras trabajamos donde la brecha de género es tan amplia. Además, cada una de las niñas, la protagonista, Natu Antu, es de un pueblo originario mapuche y también tenemos a Munata Umilla, que significa querida niña, que es del pueblo aimara. Así que con eso hemos querido abarcar un poco características muy particulares de nuestro territorio y el fenotipo de los personajes está relacionado con sus orígenes relativos a sus pueblos originarios. Así que estoy muy contenta con todos estos elementos.
Sin duda por el título del libro, surge la duda ¿somos alienígenas?
Surge la duda como preguntas: ¿somos alienígenas? Y la verdad que es una respuesta muy personal, que cada uno tiene que darla, pero siempre tiene que ser en base a la evidencia y que es, justamente, lo que yo intento hacer. Hay 8 capítulos cargados de evidencia científica, con lo cual la idea es que los lectores puedan hacer sus conjeturas en base a evidencia científica y no en base a especulaciones.
¿Cuál es la probabilidad de encontrar vida fuera del planeta tierra?
La probabilidad de encontrar vida fuera del planeta Tierra es baja, pero se está trabajando durísimo en ello. Hay muchas misiones, hay mucha información y como van a ver en el libro, sin darles muchos “spoilers”, en realidad, parecería sumamente egoísta que la vida solo exista en este universo, que solo exista en nuestro planeta. Hay que tener una serie de condiciones, por supuesto, pero para eso hay grandes instituciones en el mundo que están enfocadas en responder estas preguntas. En esas áreas, la astroquímica ha sido fundamental, para la comprensión del universo y lo que nos compone a nosotros, por tanto, muy ligada al origen de la vida.
¿Cuál es el público objetivo al cual está dirigido el libro?
Elpúblico objetivo definido son niños y niñas entre 10 y 13 años. Sin embargo, creo que es muy apto para público general y público fuera de la academia, porque es el primer libro de astroquímica de divulgación a nivel mundial enfocado también para niños de esta manera, muy lúdica.
